Newzbin gossip May 18, 2010

Posted by deepsharer in usenet.

Things are moving fast at everyones favourite Usenet indexer Newzbin. A Newzbin Editor let slip some interesting gossip to me on IRC. Apparently Newzbin has been put into administration yesterday because it couldn’t pay its debts. Word is that they owe the MPA £230,000 just in interim costs, and that’s without a full costs ruling or a decision on damages. Apparently they also owe a software development house over £500k. They also stopped taking payments a few weeks back. Fucking ouch.

I predict Newzbin is toast.

Does it mean the end of the service for users? Maybe not. While I can’t see how Newzbin can dig themselves out of this hole or carry on, there have been odd developments. Users have been pressing Newzbin to Opensource the site code but they’ve refused. However the rumour is that someone hacked their servers and grabbed the code and several databases. I PM’d a Newzbin guy and he denied knowing anything about this but the rumours are strong. Added to which Newzbin have been hacked before: about 5 years ago a database of their Paypal transactions ended up on Usenet! (Oh the irony) And another Usenet indexer also turned up running, ahem, similar looking code.

If that is right I’m guessing a clone site will spring up soon, or maybe several.

Wow. Slightly freaked that Newzbin has both closed AND linked to this blogpost to give an explanation. Just to say, I am nothing to do with Newzbin but I am (OK, was, it would seem) an editor and I knew the original guys fairly well via IRC.

I’ll see if I can get answers to questions asked below and post the replies in new blogposts.

As someone in comments said, there is a newzbin users group on irc.freenode.net #newzbin

Update 2 – 19th May

New story: privacy, source code refunds.

Update 3 – 19th May

The original site owners have confirmed that, based on source code fragments examined by them, and supplied by a third party, the site source code does appear to have been stolen and is in the hands of unknown parties. An Attack of the Clones imminent?

Newzbin is back

rediculous!!! F U C K I N G stupid!!! :@:@

MYOB - May 19, 2010

To the guys at newzbin:

“So long and thanks for the fish.”

PS: Let the Open Source folk have yer code lads.
Oh, and FUCK the MPAA parasites.

Sikki - May 19, 2010

Free the code so 100’s of 1000’s of newzbin sites can be made 😉

Hashman - May 19, 2010

This is terrible news as Newzbin changed my life for the better!

Okay, the alternatives now:

1. Where do we go for alternative newzbin sites; can any of you guys recommend us one which packed the same punch as newzbin?
2. Or, do I start making regular trips to my local HMV store and pay full-price for multi media products?

nzbmatrix is a very poor mans newzbin, but it does the job( without the superb community most are newbs)

not2dv8 - May 23, 2010

U are rite. matrix FOR NOW. The mpaa has kicked a sleeping giant.. They wont have enough money or lawyers to stop what is about to happen with file sharing. CAN YOU SAY THE CODE IS OUT

unjustified - May 19, 2010

This is a sad sad day indeed, How is it that the MPAA can get away with this ? All newzbin did was to show you where the files was to download, im sorry but i can use google to do that, just takes me a little longer, google any film title and it will come up with a torrent for it, wich we all know, is it that the MPAA only take on the ppl that do not have the financial muscle to defend themselves. What the MPAA and other film company’s have to understand is, slash your profit’s dont make as much give it to the people cheaper and you’ll make more. Good luck to the newzbin lad’s hope it all work’s out for you, as for the 300 day’s worth of credit i had left hope you got your hand’s on it befor the administraters do !!!!!!!! thank’s for evrything.

Mark Maword - May 20, 2010

They can get away with it because the unavoidable fact is that Newzbin was very clearly, deliberately and precisely indexing copyrighted material for download and charging for that service. It served no other purpose at all, other than to provide an easy means for you and I to search for and download copyrighted material without paying the owner of the work. But then I knew all that when I downloaded Adobe Master Collection CS3 with a keygen.

The guys that ran the show didn’t have a leg to stand on in court, and frankly their defense was non-existant. Why? Because they were running an operation that’s sole purpose was to provide the means for you and I to commit digital theft. Fact. Period. You know it. I know it. They knew it. You think you could convince a judge it wasn’t? Take him the list of non-copyright files you downloaded in the whole duration of your membership. Might be bigger than mine. Probably about the same.

That all came out in the court judgement, which I assume you read?

Newzbin were crooks like us and they got banged to rights. It’s a fair cop.

The MPAA do take on companies like Google, in fact their greed isn’t limiting them to targetting sites like Newzbin and Pirate Bay. Neither are they the only publisher out there trying to stop you getting your shit for free(ish).

Check out http://www.chillingeffects.org/notice.cgi for a list of who’s hitting Google with demands to remove links from their search result. Only their compliance with these notices exempts them from legal action.

A friend - May 29, 2010

What next shut down the whole internet?

You sound like acknowledgeable person but the problem is not Newzbin or peer to peer it’s the foundation of the net, free information flow.

Usenet ran since the start of the net & the source of all communications that root the sharing of information inc. software

jamie a - June 1, 2010

don’t be absurd. if i show you a place that has a shiny diamond that belongs to someone else, then tell you that your hands are able to grasp that diamond and take it for yourself, and you go take it, how the fu*k does that make me the criminal. retard. have a think before you write this sh!t.

MarkMaWord - June 1, 2010

To A Friend:

BluRay rips of Terminator Salvation aren’t really classed as ‘information’.

MarkMaWord - June 1, 2010

To Jamie A:

Perhaps it is you who should think a little before passing on the Torch Of Retardicus?

To use your own analogy, so you’ll understand, they were in fact showing you lots of shiny diamonds that they knew you might like to steal. They knew you’d like to steal them because that’s what their business was set up to assist with, diamond theft specialists if you will, and you joined up and paid a fee to be able to search for and steal the shiniest diamonds available because you are a diamond thief (for the purposes of this explanation).

They were then casing the joint for you (the joint being usenet ), putting the little diamonds into little easy to carry diamond shaped swag bags that were easier for you to carry on your merry way.

This does in fact make them a party to the crime, by entering what is known as ‘common design’. This was made quite clear by a judge in a court of law, after having heard all of the evidence available. Even the guys who ran the site could offer no defense to the contrary in court.

So really, if you were actually helping me to steal said diamond in some way in your wonderful story, you may be guilty of a crime. You should check that out with a legal professional before you show any diamonds to strangers..

However, I suspect if you actually just showed me a diamond and said I could nick it quite easily, you’d be safe enough. Too bad your rather poor analogy doesn’t fit the case of Newzbin.

You’ll want to go to 111 and 112 respectively for the judge’s decision.

not2dv8 - May 23, 2010

Yea, the whole thing is crazy. Questions: What are the courts and mpaa going to do now that the code is out? Do you think they have enough combined staff and resource to go after all of the sites, I MEAN ALL OF THE NEW SITES THAT WILL PROSPER FROM THE RESULTS OF THIS GREED? Yes, thier greed created a monster that will devour their appetite and ambition for this fight. The HUNTER HAS BEEN HUNTED!

SONIC - May 26, 2010

To Mark Maword! There are some of us who used this service for legal perposes. Also, many of us legally bought games and programs ,because we had the chance to try them out to see if it was what we wanted.Im being open minded about both sides of this topic on newzbin. There is a catch to all this copie right stuff. Most people are not aware of some things about copie rights. The MPA could also be taken to court.I wouldnt lol about this either. Some of us online gamers made a discovery about most copie rights. There is a major mistake being made by almost all companies that sell programs, games and even movies.Heres a hint to everyone…..where are most copie rights places at?Im hopeing some of you will catch on!And what happens if you try to return the movie, game or programs because you didnt like it,and was not able to read the user agreement? Are you now catching on to what im saying? Class-A legal suit! $$CHA CHING$$

Havoc - May 18, 2010

Your money is the least of the worries. Given what they provided, consider your few pounds going to a good cause. They got fucked, and you are worrying about a few lousy pounds?

AntiPay - May 18, 2010

Why is no one asking the question.. ” what happens to the users of newzbin.com

Is the MPAA going to come after them

lovek323 - May 19, 2010

Hear hear! STFU scammed

dimaj - May 21, 2010

Nothing should happen to the users…
If I remember correctly, in one of the updates during the court hearing, legal team mentioned that they don’t keep any log files. So, nobody has a way to find out what you’ve downloaded.
Plus, I could be wrong of course but, mainly companies are after seeders, not leechers.

Fly - May 19, 2010

Couldn’t agree more, I would happily have paid the same for newzbin, as I did for my usenet sub, and the 300+ days I had left, screw that.

Saddest thing is that there are no alternatives even offering remotely the same featureset as newzbin did 😦

dimaj - May 21, 2010

nzbmatrix is pretty close…
You can achieve similar RSS features by using Yahoo! Pipes.

QuitYerBitchin - May 18, 2010

How do I get in touch with someone at Newzbin to refund the credit I hadn’t used?

robbo - May 18, 2010

how about you just think of the money you have saved and thank newzbin

mrcisco - May 18, 2010

I agree. I’ve been a member for years and thought it was pretty cool that they froze everyone’s credits despite what they were going through.

Think of your “lost” credit as a contribution to the cause.

lovek323 - May 19, 2010

For crying out loud! Why are you people concerned about a few dollars? Something much worse than losing a little money is going on here.

QuitYerBitchin - May 18, 2010

14. barre - May 18, 2010

damn 😦 its was very good site, hope see something same else this

15. Diji1 - May 18, 2010

Well I kinda suspected this may happen but it’s still a shock and a huge shame for all serious usenet users. Damn… I’m pissed 😦

Many thanks to all the staff for the years of great service you provided and offering the best indexer bar none for so long. The usenet scene also was transformed by your pioneering NZB technology and implementation – you will not be forgotten.

Shame on the MPA and the legal system for providing support to their ridiculous lawsuit.

All I can say is bring on the clones.

Havoc - May 18, 2010

I agree 100% And this is just one more reason I will not buy movies on DVD. If the MPAA had taken all the costs they used to take down this site and just dropped the price of their ridiculously high moves, this would not be a problem in the first place. But the greedy bastards with their VERY high 6 and 7 digit salaries need their fix, and they have no idea how to license to other countries, so they price things so high, that downloading becomes the only solution for many. I hope the MPAA chokes on their win.

Who’s next MPAA, Google? Newzbin was nothing more than a search engine like Google (withuot the ads), and if you know how to use Google, you can find the same things there. Strange the MPAA is not suing Google. Fucking Cowards!

blucat - May 18, 2010

The Big Picture/

While I totally agree with the sentiment, have no love for the MPAA or the RIAA,and I am just as guilty as the next of taking, do keep in mind that we were all taking. Sure, just a little bit in the grand scheme, but taking just the same. Remember it’s not just the 6 and 7 digit ‘salary’ earners that your sticking. Those high earners are the ones who put up the money, always multi-millions, to create these major motion pictures. Remember that it is not just the stars who are paid. Sure they are paid a lot, but that’s because no one would buy a DVD/BluRay or movie tickets to see films with no actors they’ve ever heard of – much less pirate a film. Remember the supporting players, i.e., extras. costume designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, gaffers, caterers, drivers, runners, lighting technicians, audio technicians, camera operators, jig operators, boom operators, foley artists, post production houses, voice-over studios, graphic artists, marketing. legal & insurance (those are people, too), filming permits (local tax revenue), etc, ad nauseum. Look at the credits on any major film. Everyone in those credits are paid before the first dime of profit comes is made. And those payouts are made by those 6 and 7 digit earners. By the way, those aren’t salaries – merely profit made from very big risks. A chasm of difference between.

Now then, if you want to seriously look at a price outrage it’s the movie theater ticket price – not the DVD. Seriously, is it better to pay $8.50 to watch a movie once versus $20 or so to keep it forever?

This soapbox makes me tired. Thanks for listening and please remember the little folks.

davedude - May 19, 2010

blucat makes a somewhat valid point, however, I have no regrets about what I’ve gotten on Newzbin. Why? Well, blucat mentioned going to the cinema for 8.50 for one time viewing or 20.00 or so to “keep it forever”! Not true according to the MPAA, RIAA, PDQEXP, LSMFT whatevers! They say even though we pay real money for these DVD’s, we DO NOT OWN THEM, the production companies still own the movies, you may watch them on your licensed copy but MAY NOT back it up in case of damage, you may purchase the viewing rights to another DVD if it gets damaged. If I pay for it I’m going to protect it to the point of a backup and screw them if they think I, and thousands more, won’t back it up to protect my investment. Purchasing the DVD has made me a non compensated partial owner of the film!

Dan - May 21, 2010

I don’t agree with you blucat. These companies are ripping people off. If you want to watch ONE movie you’re sometimes paying up to three times or more for the same movie. Remember that according to these companies you pay for the rights to watch the movie, you don’t own it (ownership remains with the recording company). But why do you have to pay multiple times for the right to watch a single movie? First, if you want to see it in cinema you have to pay 8.50. Afterwards if you buy the DVD you have to pay the full price again for the rights to watch it (20-25 depending on movie and retailer) and then you have to pay the license fee again if you want to see it on blu-ray! If you happened to lose your DVD they’d simply tell you to buy it again (i.e. you’re paying for the license again since you don’t own the movie itself). So in a case like this you’d be paying three times or more for the same rights to watch a single movie (each time on a different medium, but that’s not the point). If you go to the supermarket you don’t pay three times for the same product. That’s like saying that you have to pay a license fee each time you want to drive your car. Nobody would accept that, right?

If it were up to them they’d charge you each time you watched the DVD or blu-ray. It’s ridiculous.

blucat - May 22, 2010

Good points all, maybe. My main point is that no one forces you to buy DVD’s or go to the cinema. It’s your choice. If you don’t like the price, don’t buy. That does not justify taking for nothing.

Again, I LOVED newzbin and still LOVE usenet and will keep using.

Double standard?

Absolutely, but I can admit it 🙂

16. WittZi - May 18, 2010

Wow – Bad news for the site owners and everyone using the service. I guess it just made everything so easy as opposed to the old way of searching.

The thing is, with sites such as nzbsrus and similar the authorities are fighting a losing battle anyway. And to take Usenet down = never going to happen.

When will the record, movie and software industries learn that having their libraries available online for a fair price will mean that people will use their services legitimately?! I mean seriously, look at the costs for a Newsbin / Newzbin / Giganews user:

1. Giganews account: $34.99 p/m
2. Newsbin Client: $29.99 one-off purchase
3. Newzbin.com subscription: $3 pm

So it’s not like it’s cheap anyway!! People just want digital media really quickly, so get the infrastructure in place now and GET ON WITH IT!

Loki Tryspon - May 19, 2010

I think more than ever, there are alternative. Currently, newsgroupservers has two specials – one for thundernews –
which is only $5.00 for the first month

and one for newsdemon:
that gives a lifetime 50% off any of the plans

both come with a free version of newsrover, so you save on that too. there’s still a cost, but there are deals out there to keep it sane.

Chankster - May 19, 2010

Even cheaper:

1. Astraweb account: $11.99 p/m
2. Newsbin Client: srsly? just d/l it
3. Newzbin.con sub: $3 p/m

22. Chris H - May 18, 2010

This sucks. I love newzbin and I am very saddened by its closure.

I have long wished that newzbin would have charged more for a subscription. Long ago, I feared they wouldn’t last long because of the pittance they charged for their site/service.

If they had more money in the back, perhaps they could have survived this situation. Not saying it’s so, just that it might have been possible.

23. Jester - May 18, 2010

24. Jester - May 18, 2010

Wonder what the people who have purchased credit leftover are going to think.

Havoc - May 18, 2010

I had credit left over, and I happily donate it to the guys at Newzbin. They busted their ass and fought hard. I am happy to consider it a donation to their cause.

ME - May 18, 2010

/Agree and everyone wanting their few bucks back should STFU. They never allowed more than X days payment in advance, just so there wouldn’t be anyone with really high credit “in the bank” — in case of such an occurrence .

WittZi - May 18, 2010

I literally can’t believe people are worried about their credit! Given the guys did tons to help everyone I’m sure you can all cope with losing a few quid?! FFS.

apco666 - May 18, 2010

I had 358 days, if it had’ve been a lot more I still wouldn’t be crying. I also donated when the case started, just wish I couldn’ve given more.

Been using newzbin for about 5 years and loved it.

The good times are over for the time being.

Best of luck to all the admins and editors, you’ve all done an excellent job over the years.

loader187 - May 19, 2010

I agree 50 cents a week. give me a break grow up everyone you dont need any money back they saved you 10’s of thousands of dollars and man hours. long live newzbin you will always be the king of NZB’s

ThisSucks - May 19, 2010

I agree, they took all the risk and got roasted unfortunately. I was hoping they’d come out alive. I am surprised they lost. The price was so low, I’m not worried about my losses, but theirs.

On another note, does this mean all other NZB sites are going down next? Will anyone else be too scared to put up a site as good as Newzbin was? Only time will tell…

Troy - May 18, 2010

I am worried about my Credit!! Worried it is going to the MPAA. I hope they have some assets hidden. I don’t mind the guys at Newzbin having a few pints on me… just don’t want it paid to the MPAA.

QuitYerBitchin - May 18, 2010

STFU, they saved you alot of money… assuming you didnt sign up just before they cut off payments

And another one - May 24, 2010

I did happen to buy a years worth of credit 2 days before the cut off. To be honest I wish i had known I would have bought two or three years worth of credit just so these guys could have that money too.

The fight between rights holders and end users is a stupid fight; why anyone would want to attack their fan base is beyond my. I just hope the MPAA, RIAA and others can figure this out before it’s too late for them.

… cause, I mean, we arn’t going anywhere, that’s for damn sure! 😉

monkeyDLuffy - May 18, 2010

I had over 3,000 days of credit. Man that stacks up when you’re an editor.

Sir Sabre - May 19, 2010

OMG…I had 48 weeks of credit left and I could care less about getting my $30 back, that was nothing for what Newzbin provided and in the end took on for US…the Usenet USERS!. They did for us what many of us could not do as easily and made it so foolproof that we could find what we were looking for in a matter of seconds. If you had any issues, it was looked after in a matter of minutes and with a very cheery response.

The MPAA should be destroyed anyway possible. These greedy bastards need to be brought down to the real world, calling your daily user ‘thieves’…. they are the thieves for what they expect people to pay for the product. If Usenet and other methods of obtaining Movies, music, etc disappeared today, they would still expect the price they ask now and soon enough even more!

Shame on you RIAA, MPAA all you other pieces of garbage & for the people who DO WANT A REFUND……. Get a life and be thankful you are not an operator of Newzbin with the £750,000 bill!

chepnut - May 19, 2010

I would of gladly put in 5 years worth, just so they could of had some extra money in the bank. If they would of put it on the front page that they needed cash, I bet they would of gotten a huge responce.

41. tard - May 18, 2010

Is Newzbins site linking to this article which is largely about the source and database being “hacked” imply something. It seems like an odd article to link to. Why not put this information on their page?.

42. BobCat - May 18, 2010

I don’t even care about the year of credits I lose, it’s the service I’m sad about. Down with the MPAA for infringing on my freedoms. Newzbin isn’t breaking the law, the user who downloads copyrighted material is breaking the law.

Can’t believe all the moaning tw@ts You knew they were in trouble when you resubscribed, they hid nothing from us and we all made a choice to do it. They were the best on the net by far and I have no complaints at all. Those asking about alternatives, try:
Merlins Portal – very good…… or. NZB Matrix

newsjunky - May 18, 2010

yea, really people… why are some of you worried about the credits you have left??? I had many months left. Pocket change for the service they provided and we’ve ALL been using it for free for a few months now anyways.

This is a sad day indeed, I made many friends on this site.

imissnewzbin - May 19, 2010

Sir Sabre - May 19, 2010

WOW Steve!! A year and a half!! You’re trying to take these people down in their worst time, especially when Newzbin only ever allowed up to 52 weeks of Credit total.

Why be such a thieving little piece of SHIT when Newzbin gave you thousands more than you ever paid. Get a God Damn Life,

tdn - May 19, 2010

Go complain to the MPA. They’re the ones who caused this.

Anti-Steve - May 20, 2010

Some of us purposefully bought extra credit because it was an easy way to donate for their fight.

Considering the value for money you got from the Newzbin service, it might have been more appropriate to THANK them, instead of bitching over a few measly dollars.

Steve - May 22, 2010

They hoped to make money. As Google, IBM, Facebook, Blackwell Briggs or others do So, they just didn’t pull the right trigger…but my money ist in there pocket. I have the right to shout it out. If anyone try to pull out money off my wallet without any return…so wtf

They have to give me my money back. I payd you to brng me a service. They want to do in the future…give me my money back i payd you for the future.

Whats wrong with it?

stfu - May 26, 2010

Seriously? Yeah, Steve. This whole thing was a conspiracy to rob you. The MPAA took the Newzbin guys out drinking tonight, laughing at your expense (literally.)
Are you fucking serious?
Even if Newzbin wanted to pay back whiny ungrateful little bitches, they couldn’t- their assets are not under their control. Why don’t you moan to the MPAA about it, I’m sure they’ll be oh so sympathetic to your plight.
Furthermore, nobody is ever going to take your bitching seriously when you can’t even form coherent sentences. When it takes two or three reads to try deciphering the tripe you’re spewing, it just isn’t worth the effort; you could have made some profound breakthrough on the coevolutionary theory of black holes, and nobody would bother to read it because it would look like their cat got loose on the keyboard again.

Thanks for this report… Life without Newsbin is going to be tough unless a clone appears. The media industry is just so greedy and so out of touch when it comes to delivering a modern service. My gripes are that they pay top actors crazy sums like 20 – 40 million dollars to make often poor movies and then expect us to jump to their marketing plan… giving us a service I think oh, so not.

Itsashe - May 19, 2010

I would never ever pay 50 dollar for a game thats not even good or fun for more than 2-3 hours. There are several titels i have been interesting in buying, but never for that price.
How about the companies coming down to earth and take resonable prices for the games and dvd’s, then it would be easyer to buy Legal copies instead of downloading them.

Imo its just greedy, i can understand that they want payed for their efforts and job, but selling 1000 cd’s for 49.00 or 5000 cd’s for say 25 dollar?

Jacksowner - May 21, 2010

I like to try before I buy. I do buy what I use and like.
In fact I have bought many dollars worth of games, programs, movies, and music that I would not have bought had I not been able to TRY FOR FREE first. And many I never would have heard of was it not for the Usenet and I mean thousands of dollars. And If I do it there must be a lot of other people doing the same.
I would like to note that free trials of programs that are restricted by options or time frickin suck. buy the time I have a chance to use it it has expired, or works at 70%. so I try before I buy.
Some game companies shouldn’t be making games they suck so much, I wonder how the get the money to waste on such crap. so I try before I buy. Movies, if they are good enough to keep and watch again then they are good enough to buy.
As far as the music, I used to DJ (as a hobby) and did about about 15 gigs a year for 7 years. Because I could download and listen to the music out there on the web for free. I puchased over 1500 cds (yes even the one’s with only one good song… the bastards). They need the Usenet at least if they want my money.

zobo - May 21, 2010

mention as many sites as you can think of. the mpaa/riaa have hired guns who will find them anyway. every site they take to court will cost ’em a piece of their pile. the more sites they find, the more expense they’ll have. at some point they’ll see that their cost/effect ratio has plummeted, and produced a motherfucker of a nosebleed. newzbin was targeted only after months of investigation and evaluation. because of their loyal following, reputation, and professionism, they were selected so to be made AN EXAMPLE which hopefully will frighten others into shutting down and prevent new start-ups from forming. it was a done deal before the first filing, everyone who needed to be paid off in order to secure a win was paid more than a year prior. that’s why all those greasy hollywood fucks arrived to court daily with the same condescending smirk on their faces; they knew the fix was in. targeting newzbin was an ECONOMIC choice made by a bunch of fat slobbering assholes who’s greed is surpassed only by their dishonesty. their every step is governed by economics and the never-ending fear that someone will steal their pile when they’re sleeping.. someone will steal. their pile.

who exactly are these guys? and where exactly are they?

these are the topics they fear we’ll discuss, more than anything else in the whole wide world. their anonymity (to them) is priceless.

Newzbin said during the hearing that if it lost the case it would still operate its website, but might introduce filtering.

A Newzbin spokesman said earlier this month: “If (The MPA) win, then Newzbin will not be shut down.

96. Arnold - May 18, 2010

Are you forgetting the fact that Newzbin was a commercial business and had a turnover of over 1 MILLION per year?

If a company is making that much, they can afford to give there customers the few quid back when they ceased all accounts.

But no, they were greedy. They pretended they couldn’t do it, and now they declared themselves bankrupt to riddle out of paying the people they owe money to (which includes servers, bandwidth, coders…)

DiskKoppy - May 18, 2010

Are you 12 or something Arnold? Angry because you lost your pocket money?

That’s £1M TURNOVER, not profit. You think they didn’t need to pay for the servers and bandwidth to host that site? And how much do you think they had to spend defending that site in court so that you could get a hell of a lot for virtually nothing?

If anyone is greedy it’s the idiots that are moaning about their lost credits. I very much doubt the owners have come out of this with any money left at all.

102. Anonymous Coward - May 18, 2010

I am/was 425 days in credit, but I’m not asking for that back. I’m glad it lasted as long as it did.

Would like to see what happens next, though. My first thought is a distributed service that nobody can take down, but it’s the control and order that newzbin.com imposed that gave it the quality. And god knows, nobody using usenet would want to use a p2p based service if they could help it.

So, what can we come up with that’s based on usenet itself?

103. Arnold - May 18, 2010

The question is now, do the MPA get the user database?

Regan - May 18, 2010

Man you’re a fucking idiot….. If you had been an involved Newzbin user, you would know already that Newzbin does not, did not, will not keep records of your IP, or the NBZs you DL’d.

Sir Sabre - May 19, 2010

The user database only had usernames, no actual names and addresses attached. Once the payment was completed the account info was updated and then “real Info” destroyed.

Those guys must have saved me thousands, I’m not fucking over a couple of quid. Fucking bummed though… lets hope something semi decent arises from the ashes.

106. Peenix - May 18, 2010

I can’t believe how many idiots are demanding a refund, idiots!

RIP Newzbin

107. Steve'O - May 18, 2010

Shame , Shame , Shame ,,,, I am so disapointed in all the people that have downloaded and are now moaning about the funds that they have left , come on guys we have had it so good for a long time , its gone from a closed group to open access to all ,, how long did you think it would last being in the public domain ,,, good luck Newzbin you have gave me good sewrvice and alot of good D/L’s keep my money ,,,,,,, PS thanks to all the good guys who have posted over the years ,, dose anyone know of any other established indexing sites ????

108. Steve'O - May 18, 2010

Good Question Arnold ,,, Will they have access to the user DB Newzbin staff please advise as I know you will be watching this Forum

109. island boy - May 18, 2010

Any alternatives out there that have comments like newzbin? To avoid downloading something that isn’t any good. I’m gonna miss them. I wish there was some warning so I could have downloaded the nzb’s I had bookmarked. Only thing I’m upset about.

110. B - May 18, 2010

R.I.P newzbin! Thnx for everything!

And to all you greedy, cheap ass bastards…go F*CK yourselfs!

respect newzbin

111. burnout - May 18, 2010

yea they probably made money, but dont forget all the lawyers cost.

I for one dont need the refund, and wouldnt ask for it. They were a great site, that did something some countries would consider is illegal.

Think of all the stuff you downloaded from there site, and imagine paying for it instead.

who cares about the money, I agree with Arnold, what happens to there User Database?

112. Mr Ginge - May 18, 2010

i love you newzbin, you will of course be missed by many. may you rest in peace. im not worried about loosing a few quid in credit because i got one over the likes of bill gates, got to think of number ha ha ha i got loads of stuff from newzbin and i love it cant wait for the clones. fuck all the companys that want to charge hundreds for software i love fucking you up the arse. and as for the bloke in coment 80 what the fuck you wont get fuck all, newzbin are getting raped you think ur going to get anything out of them, you probably had hundreds of pounds of stuff. everyone stop moaning about credit loss. dick heads, go to trading standards ha ha .
im going to do my own site mr ginge bin.com

113. SAD USER - May 18, 2010

RIP Newzbin
MPA hope to see you join them soon

It was a great ride while it lasted.
i had like a year worth of credit left that i got at xmas pricing so like $12, not worth bitching about. if i could just get somthing that would do ratings on files in usernet that would be grate.

not the same but helpfull none the less

114. dubbelfrisss - May 18, 2010

fuck that money,

I want my downloads.

this is really sad news guys, really fucking sad news

newzbin was the best

i hope that we get some replacements

back to FTD , fuck that

115. Merkin ChickenTard - May 18, 2010

NZBMatrix has ALWAYS been better – & cheaper too. 😀

martin - May 18, 2010

I disagree, newzbin was better looking, faster and it included titles for tv-episodes.

nzbmatrix also limits the amount of nzbs you can download over a 24 hour period, and yes, this has already affected me twice.

Completely Wrong - May 19, 2010

NZBMatrix is a turd. As well as being slow as hell to navigate (there’s like 25 entries per page, ffs), its terrible design makes the whole experience a total fucking chore.

Even though I’m a VIP there, I truly hope something better comes out so I can immediately jump ship. NZBMatrix appears to currently be the best nzb service at the moment, but that’s not exactly hard when the rest of them are gigantic steaming piles of shit.

Newzbin was the only indexing service not run by complete morons.

@NZBMatrix: Redesign your fucking mess of a site, for Christ’s sake! Copy Newzbin’s design if you have to. What you currently have belongs in the late 1990s on GeoCities.

St. George's Lance - May 19, 2010

That’s sooo funny, dude!!

NewzBin, you were a wonderful episode in my life and will always have a place in my heart. R.I.P

116. makus - May 18, 2010

are we going to see any _refunds_ ?

117. RX_Pain - May 18, 2010

What a bunch of BULLSHIT!!! I’ve been a Newsbin member for YEARS. I only use the site to tell me what’s been posted and where…Anyone know another good site that shows what’s been posted to alt.binarries newsgroups?

Thanks for any help or Info. Lets all PRAY that Newsbin can some-how make a comeback.

118. John Stamos - May 18, 2010

those retarted a@@@@@@@@@ I feel for the newzbin guys they should put a donation page up on newzbin.com
wouldn’t bring much in, but it would bring some in.

119. dread - May 18, 2010

is there a way to sue them personally, i mean not the company, but the admins personally. i think they still have a lot of money.
we could get back our credits.

Regan - May 18, 2010

Man you’re a fucking idiot…..

Completely Wrong - May 19, 2010

Is there a way for the MPAA to sue you directly? I mean, not your household, but you personally. I think you still have a lot of downloaded data. The MPAA could get back their money.

Don’t be an idiot.

I’ve got over a year’s worth of credit with Newzbin. I gladly allow them to keep it for the superb service over the years.

a - May 19, 2010

Best post ever. PERIOD.DOT.

120. Chump - May 18, 2010

tbh, we all saw this coming, Newzbin have been posting updates quite frequently about its legal standings. If anyone had any sence, they would of cancelled subscriptions and asked for money back way before now! But no, everyone just wanted to keep downloading and hoped that this would never happen. Well now it has, you can hardly complain that you cant get your money back. I am probably owed a few quid to, but im not worried. I just think about all the money i saved by using this excellent site. There will be other like it, maybe not as good, but there will be others….. “you can’t stop the signal Mal”

121. ekafmaps - May 18, 2010

oh shit… *sighs* …there, are, more nzb sites…

back in the day when we had to have an irc client running 24/7 to be eligible for access to such stuff, or belong to a group… we never had problems like this 😀

122. [CFL]Norman - May 18, 2010

Cocky cocky cocky – Justice Kitchen is a Pillock – blah blah blah -…

Newzbin goes tits. Ohhhh Theres a shock. Funny as fuck. Dickheads.

NZB4Life - May 18, 2010

Sounds like you have some inadequacy issues there “Norman”.

[CFL]Norman - May 18, 2010

They were as cocky as fuck and the English judicial system crushed them. Why is that my problem? Why the fuck am I inadequate because Newzbin buried themselves you cunt?

jon - May 18, 2010

I dont think anyone said it was your problem you Norman. I think he was just saying that youre a twat. Fair point I think.

StorminNorminFan - May 19, 2010

(.) (.) - May 19, 2010

+1 for not getting it

dongato - May 19, 2010

lol, what a cunt. why are you here, you miserable bitch?

123. Ronj - May 18, 2010

I’m sorry to see them go, very sad screw the mpa they have enough money greedy bastards. I had 166 days left I don’t care about the money.

124. kkattfish - May 18, 2010

themonkeymafia.info FTW

125. Mike Phillips - May 18, 2010

perhaps we need an IRC chat room to discuss other sites. i am sure the MPAA is watching this forum as well, so lets not give them any pointers please.

I’m sure they already know everything anyways but yea gotta love it when idiots post links to other indexers

ScraperJB - May 19, 2010

Yeah like, Hey I got every movie ever made and you can get it at blah blah blah.

Again, MPAA, Newzbin was not providing these downloads. It was only a site that sorted information. That doesn’t delete the information from the internet, you idiots. Good luck ever getting rid of the internet.

126. Zombie - May 18, 2010

A damn shame. A great site, a good community (on the whole). I lurked in the irc channel for a long time, had over 1,000 days of credit left.

Guys, thanks for a great ride. It’s been fun. Good luck in your future endeavours.

127. Mike - May 18, 2010

Just wish they’d given a day’s notice so I could back up my saved searches :/

128. Mr. O - May 18, 2010

oooes noes!!!

the horror!

129. Chris - May 18, 2010

What’s the legal status of the source code? Would there be anything stopping them push it to somewhere like GitHub? 🙂

130. billy bob - May 18, 2010

this is a sad sad day I was with them for like ever! Well worth the money, hope they win all other cases.

Soooo now where is that hacked code and what’s the IP ??? 🙂 🙂 😉

131. john miller - May 18, 2010

Timmy Gump said it best ,
we all have downloaded thousands of $$ worth of stuff.
And ppl are crying over a few $

ScraperJB - May 19, 2010

I know. Those people must be short time users. Thanks for the money anyways.

132. morgansf - May 18, 2010

I don’t care about the money, it was peanuts and definitely well worth the price compared to alternatives; what I care about is the site! How well it worked, how configurable it was and how quickly I could find what I want – there’s no comparison, and I’ve tried all the alternatives. This is terrible news.

133. name - May 18, 2010

how about making the software available for everyone? placing it under gnu/gpl license would be a fine move.

HostileHST - May 19, 2010

Agreed, would teach MPA just how hard to fuck themselves. REAL HARD BITCHES!

134. Mr. O - May 18, 2010

if they need money, plz make them set up a fund..

[CFL]Norman - May 18, 2010

So sad pricks like you can fund them?

John Stamos - May 18, 2010

why are you such a fag? the guy set a site up and ppl like u are just worrying about the cash, grow a pair and think of others

Regan - May 18, 2010

You are such a fucking douche bag…

jon - May 18, 2010

Leave Norman alone he is cleary going through some teenage angst. Funny.

melvin - May 18, 2010

re:reply no 1
It is spelled ridiculous. Who are you calling f-ing stupid.

ilmoakw - May 19, 2010

I’m calling you fucking stupid Melvin. I’m doing it. What are ya gonna do about it?

melvin - May 21, 2010

Well, ilmoakw, I will see to it that you die within the next 150 years!

135. PPP - May 18, 2010

well this fucking sucks…fucking politicians … i hope they can get out of this cheap, or at least relatively cheap..
good luck fellas.. thanks for great service over the years! and whoever want their money back…well.. WTF? cmon…

136. NZB Pimp - May 18, 2010

I tell you… One minute I was just trying to find an episode of Oprah I missed and then all of sudden I get redirected here. Thanks Newzbin for all your years of service!!! Yes SERVICE!!! And that’s all they provided was a SERVICES. Not the Bootleggin operation that the bone headed judge found you guilty of.

fotd - May 19, 2010

Piracy is not one of Oprah’s favorite things! Now we know what really killed the site.

Gonna miss you newzbin. Keep the 2xx days i had left, would have gladly paid more!

137. ... - May 18, 2010

OMG they are going to prosecute members based on their download NZB file download logs?

dread - May 18, 2010

yeah thats EXACTLY what is going to happen you dumb fuck

Chump - May 18, 2010

where did you hear that?

NZB Pimp - May 18, 2010

I recall the Newzbin folks stating that they DID NOT log these transactions. So don’t believe that BS

Stevil - May 18, 2010

Every business logs cc payments, and Newzbin was a business. It will start there.

I’ve seen it before.

jon - May 18, 2010

Ignore that, its just Norman being a twat again. =)

Regan - May 18, 2010

Newzbin doesn’t log your IP or the NBZs you DL’d Fucking Relax….

138. huleboeren - May 18, 2010

RIP Newzbin
and FU Arnold
Keep my 40 days of nzb credit, use it to perhaps engage in a new innovative internet thing or retire 🙂
Good service for cheap money

Anywho, I am off to http://www.nzbs.org which I find is the best alternative to newzbin and what newzbin lite should have been.

Really digging nzbs.org

AlphaOmega - May 19, 2010

Does it require an invite? Or have they just stopped accepting new registrations during these crazy times?

default - May 19, 2010

They do not accept new members…

cd69 - May 19, 2010

Unfortunately there is no way to check this site as they aren’t taking any new members.Bummers as like so many is looking for an alternative to Newzbin…

ScraperJB - May 19, 2010

Too bad they are not accepting new memberships. Probably on the same path as Newzbin. Good luck to them though.

139. Lee Cope - May 18, 2010

shame it had to come to this, really good site. i lost 66 weeks of credit, but ill get over it stop complaning about lost credit. they need it now they are 300k in debt. they provided a great service for 25p a week nzbmatrix is ok but it aint as good as newsbin.

140. Elvis - May 18, 2010

Whats with all these moaning F***s going on about there lost credits?
So you lost a few £ or $ these guys who provided you with an excellent service are set to lose a lot more than that, get over it and quit your inconsiderate rambling.
Think how much you spent and downloaded compared with the costs of going to a shop/cinema and paying the full price.
RIP Newzbin

141. Joe Moon - May 18, 2010

Y’all should be lucky they don’t pull them user logs and cc transactions and start suing the ever loving bejesus out of you. NEWZBIN LOGGED EVERYTHING and now they will be forced to turn them over.

Fun Police - May 18, 2010

IT’s true! They said it on IRC!
15:00:42 yes
15:00:44 yes
15:00:46 yes

That’s three admins agreeing all at once, therefore, it must be true!

Regan - May 18, 2010

You’re a fucking idiot…. Newzbin has never logged IPs or NBZ file DLs… Stop being a total Douche bag

ACiD - May 19, 2010

logged what ? a disposable credit card number that i used to get on the site ? via greendot ? or wait , they have my user information which includes a nickname and a password…. ohhhh ouch….. oh wait i know they logged the nzb’s i downloaded ? so phucking what …… NOTHING that I ever used on newzbin ever will amount to anything or any privacy issues. No they didn’t log anything except transactions. in reality it wasn’t them directly but their CC processing page that did that. 3rd party. sorry buddy, try again… if your going to vent about things , at least make it something that makes sense. Sorry if you lost out , most all of us did on at least a few dollars. I myself had 255 days left of an account. Its a good thing i only signed up for a year., The last time i Topped up (around xmas time 2009) there was a link on there for top up for 2 and 3 years……..

142. [CFL]Norman - May 18, 2010

NEWZBIN is still ‘playing’ people!

143. babaurhum - May 18, 2010

Bad news 😥

144. Mr. O - May 18, 2010

I just made a new account on another large nzb site.. but if they start a fund, I will gladly pay 10$ or so.. even if newzbni never again sees the light of day.. I just want to give something back to the creators.

145. ME - May 18, 2010

People are such crybabies on this thread! Wasn’t NEWZBIN like $2.00 US per 3 months?

Do you stand on a corner BEGGIN for those $2? NO? Then write it off, what are you crying about?!

146. phone operator - May 18, 2010

147. newzbinRIP - May 18, 2010

What real alternatives is there to newsbin?

148. Spider - May 18, 2010

why don’t we have a boycott the cinema, video rental shop, put cable/sky and subs on hold month? Do you think that would create a message?

149. toetoe121 - May 18, 2010

WOW, I am deeply sad by this whole situation…This was 1 of the best sites….I hope there will be more like this one soon..I hope that no one can get our info that would really suck for all of us…..

150. andrew66 - May 18, 2010
cd69 - May 23, 2010

Newzsearch.com is done

151. xander101 - May 18, 2010

Thanks for all the editors and moderators…See ya all on the flip side…lol
To all you leeches it is still all out there but no one is willing to spoon feed you any more….

152. treelo - May 18, 2010

im fucking made up its been shut down. was a customer for about 5 years and when i asked on their IRC channel why i couldnt purchase more than 1 years worth of credit had lycos chat style abuse thrown my way by the idiotic cocksuckers of the site.

i asked them to delete my account and found another paying site within 10 minutes which i have found much better 😀

unlucky NZB Chris…..who personally joined in with the ‘banter’…he who laughs last and all that…

153. chan - May 18, 2010

OMG Noooo! :/

I was a Newzbin user for like 5 years. It was the greatest usenet indexing site out there.

You will be missed.

154. sicclee - May 18, 2010

it was fun while it lasted eh? let’s all stop pretending that what were doing isn’t grossly immoral (think, Adobe CS 5 master collection downloaded in less than an hour for the low price of free). pirating is addicting, you checked newzbin once a day (probably more) with no real goal, just browsing to see what you can steal next. how many times did you hit the external link button for something to see what it was, and THEN download it. imagine how that looks to the judge trying the case… that you didn’t even think about stealing this game/movie/app until newzbin put it in it’s list o’ free shit for you to enjoy. kinda fucked up… you can say fuck the mpaa til your blue in the face, but know damn well that if you had a product or service that people were raping the shit out of daily, you’d be crying to the judge too. anyone that truly believes that pirating anything is justified is just fucking retarded (coming from someone who was been doing it since before cable modems came out).

furthermore, all the people that want their money back… now you know how the mpaa feels, lmao. i mean, are you fucking serious?? you’re worried about the 6 bucks you paid after stealing thousands of dollars worth of digital media? u so funny.

Lastly, although newzbin was the best, it certainly wasnt the only. i hope im not the only person that’s been registered with other nzb sites for years… and im not sure how many of you realize this, but the files are still on usenet, and will be for a loong time, even if nzbs went to heaven, you just have to try a little harder. would probably be for the best, eh? shit like this always goes awry when you stupid proof it for the masses.

p.s. whens the last time you guys stopped to thank all the people that bust their ass and risk their freedom to put this media on your computer? huge thanks to all the release groups: crackers, coders, distributors, insiders, AND the posters and editors on great sites like newzbin. without these sceners you’d be in line at redbox right now (perish the thought!)

sicclee - May 18, 2010

btw i wonder how these other nzb sites are going to handle the increased traffic, lol,

sicclee - May 19, 2010

Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to nzbmatrix.com

it would appear…not so well…

john miller - May 19, 2010

Good point !

155. drstupid - May 18, 2010

RIP newzbin, you’ve been good to me.

156. Me - May 18, 2010

Shame, but….

google search nzb downloads, click, click, and carry on as before.

157. usenet-lurker - May 18, 2010

I should have known something was up when they quit taking payments for topping up.

158. globaldjnetwork - May 18, 2010

They should set up a donations page and let joe public make donations to clear some debts, that would really feck MPAA off and i would gladly make a donation to help the guys out, they provided a service to content that can also be found on any search engine if you took the time to look but as someone has already said They wont go after the big boys like Google……

159. OMG - May 18, 2010

160. MPAA employee - May 18, 2010

Howzabout everyone let us know who else to target?

I’ve had a few suggestions already from the previous posts….

Any more we can add to our list?

Marvin Lipschitz - May 19, 2010

I have some others to target, how about all the JEWS, and more of the JEWS and some more JEWS. I could use some new lampshades and cheap help, yes target ALL THE JEWS.

161. martin - May 18, 2010

I do not want a refund, I had 500+ days left of credit but I don’t want to make an already bad situation even worse, if possible I would donate to get the site back up and running again, like it was six months ago, before they were forced to limit their indexing services.

so come on! just let them keep the money, truth be told, newzbin was a really cheap service and I think they deserved more for that quality of content and the site design itself.

Good luck guys!

martin - May 18, 2010

oh and btw, I should also mention, I will donate even if the site never comes back up, I wasn’t a long time member as many others here probably have been, but still like i mentioned in my previous post, the quality of newzbin was really over the top.

I’m boycotting DVD and music purchases for now.

162. jason - May 18, 2010

GUTTED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

163. Bubba - May 18, 2010

“Users have been pressing Newzbin to Opensource the site code but they’ve refused.”

Why? I can understand while they were running a business, but due to legal action they wound up shutting down; how in any way does it benefit them to keep the source closed? I never understood the closed source mentality that will clutch source code into the grave. Like when almost completed games are never released and the source is locked in a vault, rather than given to the community to finish and release, or like here, where someone has a site or app that is either shut down, or about to be shut down by legal action from rightsholder groups. For Christ sake why NOT release the source at that time; there is just no better way to day FU to whoever is suing you!

Zippie - May 19, 2010

dood, they will get raped harder by the MPA if they release the code, that’s why the site was conveniently “hacked” and the source code was “stolen” read between the lines you nub.

164. Nightmare - May 18, 2010

Damn, this site was so good, i’ll never find anotherone like this…..
Whre should i download now?????

165. Jim - May 18, 2010

Usenet is now in Jeopardy. Prepare for Internet 2.0. Further lock-down, suppressed freedom of speech, corporate media owned tubes. Drink your tap water, pay your taxes and STFU, slaves.

While I’m partially joking about it, Internet 2.0 does exist and is a serious threat to freedom of speech. Do a quick search on it.

166. Just another - May 18, 2010

To the tight fisted whingers bleating about their money.

Get a life, you penny pinching wankers

Newzbin saved so many of us thousands for the price of 1 dvd a year.

Newsbin was the best. Every NZB site owes it’s existence to them.

Thanks to the team that preovided us with so much over the years.
You will be missed.

167. Bob - May 18, 2010

The Horror, at least I downloaded mucho crapo in anticipation of this sad day.

168. Fred - May 18, 2010

So soon? This legal debate has been going on for over a year. Bottom line is if you want to pirate software and movies you will pay the price in the end. I only downloaded replacement disks for clients that lost theirs or grabbed tv shows. I only hope logs were given to the feds so end users will be slapped with fines as well.

Piracy kills the economy so your just as guilty as wallstreet for the collapse of our economy.

john miller - May 19, 2010

I only downloaded replacement disks for clients
Yeah and I don’t inhale.

and it was Banks not Wallstreet and if end users get fined , You will be right with the rest of the end users,
I can hear it now BUT I only downloaded replacement disks for clients haha what a joke

169. Bill Gates - May 18, 2010

ohhh.. thats bad… mininova, newzbin… and others.. who ll be the next?
I hope newzbin team be ok…

170. MoJo - May 18, 2010

Shame they have decided to close the site, however as it was tied as an asset to thier company then nothing else they can do.

I use http://www.nzbsrus.com anyway, pretty decent site and always has what I need.

171. Lezenko - May 18, 2010

I was a member of Newzbin for well over 4 – 5 years and it was in my opinion the best site on the net for doing what it did.

Im sad to of read this and many of us will be lost without you!

172. kwacka - May 18, 2010

Thanks to everybody who was involved in newzbin – you ran a great service.

I’m just hoping that you don’t get stung too much by the courts – that’s if your appeal fails.

I can’t understand the people here whining about a few pounds/dollars when you stand to lose everything.

173. newzbin - May 18, 2010

174. Proud warez junkie since 85 - May 18, 2010

Remember everyone. Subscribing to the service and paying for access is not illegal in any country on earth. I could download every nzb ever created on Newzbin and still have never broken a single law.
Thanks to the Newzbin crew, and please take my credit and have a drink on me.

175. Zladivliba - May 18, 2010

There are A LOT of programs that will allow you to find things on usenet. Simply look at http://www.freebsdsoftware.org/news/ will give you an idea of the variety of them

176. Mark - May 18, 2010

Well, we knew what was gonna happen really.

Once the ruling was passed they were screwed.

Anyway – this is what I’ve been using for the past couple of months and it’s pretty awesome:

No, this isn’t a promo – it’s just another cool service like Newzbin that you can use, that I’ve been using.

Good luck Newzbin – you provided an awesome service for years!

177. bod - May 18, 2010

who’s to say anything on this blog is true? Newzbin could have run off to Spain with a big load of dosh for all we know.

Still the idea that i’ve finally paid the MPA for everything i’ve downloaded sounds quite nice.

178. Mark - May 18, 2010

They can have everything I had left for credit: the cretainly deserve it for all they did. This site was the best for the years I needed to find something. Sad to see it go. Here’s hoping that they come back in some form.

Newzbin: ““Some people have speculated that if we lose we may be closed down, but even the MPA isn’t arguing for that: what’s being debated is the manner in which we operate not whether we operate,” said the company in an update.

“The message we want you to take away is that, win or lose, you can be confident that the site is here to stay in the long term.”

Sums it up really.

186. Ted Gay Gibson From Victoria BC - May 18, 2010

It was obvious that the Damages would wipe them out. They owe me a bit but they are welcome to it. I had fun out of the site. Worth every penny.

Lets hope a hundred sites open to replace them.

Anyone got an alternative??

196. rustybikes - May 18, 2010

Well, nothing to do but lift a glass and toast the Newzbin folks for their years of outstanding service. I’m going to sorely miss ’em.

It was fun while it lasted. Cheers!

197. Tom - May 18, 2010

Very sad to hear this. Newzbin was a work of wonder.

By the way, bookmarking something on there wouldn’t prove you ever did anything but… bookmark something on there. Fear not the logs.

198. bunnyuk - May 18, 2010

i had 386 days of credit left and dont care it was the best sitei have used in years jus ta shame a bunch of money grabbing twats could bring it to its knees there are alot of other sites built along the same lines but not as good perhaps they will get as good you can never tell people should stop crying about loseing a few £/$ all who used the site saved alot more than they could have lost shame the companys who did this cant think like newzbin did sad to to them go btu i wish the guys the best of luck in future and for the ones saying they earned this that or the other they where the ones doing all the work sad to see ya go guys

200. nim-nim - May 18, 2010

oh well it was good while it lasted.

201. Reminiscent user - May 18, 2010

So I could care less about my credits except that, all the money is going to the MPA now. Its not about leaving them with what little we gave for the service, I would be all for that. The site is shutdown because they are no longer in control of any of the monies and they are now essentially bankrupt. The people they owe money to are now fighting over your left over credits, the MPA.

So if you want your money back file a complaint with Paypal or your credit card company for failure to provide a service paid for. In the US they have to store this money in a separate account until they have completed providing of the service. This may be the case with them as well. That money will all go to the MPA to fund their next court case unless you file a complaint with your payment processor now.

That is your only hope for getting your monies back.

202. A FAN - May 18, 2010

203. bunnyuk - May 18, 2010

wow people are getting worried a nzb does not contain any copywrite material so its the same as getting a google search

204. Stevil - May 18, 2010

Here’s the obvious one that no one seems to be talkin’ about. Are the members of Newzbin the next target for the MPAA? That’s a far bigger concern than getting your few dollars, pounds, pesos, euros etc. back

Will Newzbin be paying off the MPAA with “intellectual property”, their code and databases? If the site owners have big enough balls they would trash their databases and confidential information ASAP. They are done, they won’t be back. Trust me I worked in the online casino business and when the raids started, we rented shredders and wiped everything it’s the right thing to do.

Sad to see it happen, but with the paranoid world we live in where corporations are willing to spend millions to ferret out the people using services like Newzbin it will continue to happen. So be prepared for a bunch of scared service providers who scale back services to avoid the MPAA, and even more MPAA court actions. They have a fresh kill now and are looking for blood. They have yet to figure out there is only a few thousand on them, and billions of us wanting it for free. This is the Internet, were are inventive, we will adapt, and continue to get the materials we are looking for.

Good-Bye Newzbin

bod - May 19, 2010

no ones takin’ about users being targeted as Nezbin have stated many times that no logs of what user’s download is kept. They might have your username and ip, but what good is that to anyone. Stop scaremongering.

205. Dawn Brosnan - May 18, 2010

210. bob - May 18, 2010

Well done MPA. Now I have to spend another 10/15min finding another site. Big congratulations. Hope the lawyers were value for money as they have made no difference to me. In fact they have saved me cash as I now use a free search tool

Newzbin has introduced me and others to many programs/music files that we would have never heard of other wise. If I see some thing I like, then I can and go spend money on it. Because of Newzbin I and people I know have spent more on DVDs than we would have otherwise.

MPAA, if you wanna stop losing money stop making crap.

215. NZB Lover - May 18, 2010

I think everybody needs to calm down. So, they closed. Big deal. There is already another site in place, and more to come for sure. It always happens. So, it is not the end of the world, not even a slight setback.
In my book, they are gone today, forgotten tomorrow.
And people who want their money back is full within their rights to demand it because nobody is supposed to pay for Newzbin’s legal problems but Newzbin. The victims should now complain to paypal and credit card companies for services not delivered.
After all, Newzbin’s proud announcement was they were here to stay regardless….

216. GonnaMissYouAll - May 18, 2010

RIP Newzbin
Thank you for all the hard work and service you have provided over the years you will be sorely missed topped up for over a year please use it to help in whatever way needed as for the cry babies who want their money back if they are that hard up then maybe they need another job or get a job period too bad those cry babies were members this site was way too good for them Good Luck in whatever the future may bring!!!!!

217. o0RaidR0o - May 18, 2010

R.I.P. Newzbin, sniffle, sniffle! It boggles the mind that gathering search engine can be held accountable for others posting’s. I remember this happen to another site that I was contributor to, http://www.dvderotica.net, it also was shut down due to a law suit from the fagots at MPAA. These do not host files of any kind, they do not post files as well, they’re are just mere pointers if you will, gatherers of information to whats already available. It goes to show the lengths at which the MPAA/RIAA and the rest will go and are allowed to go without due process.

218. mochaj - May 18, 2010

219. sadpanda - May 18, 2010

What I don’t understand is why they are giving up so easily?
Register a LLC in the Russian Republic, http://www.newzbin.ru ftw. I’d sign right back up. If they keep the old database they can even give all the whiners their credit back.

Regan - May 18, 2010

Give them their credits back and then ban them from ever using the site again for being greedy, disloyal, selfish, small minded, douche bags.

Foreboding - May 19, 2010

icares - May 19, 2010

LOL that’s exactly what I said when the lawsuit began… I guess its not that simple.

Itaintrite - May 19, 2010

Who’s to say they aren’t planning something already? Maybe put the old site back up on new host… and wait for another lawsuit. Or maybe a clone under new name. Or not. We’ll see. There are plenty of other indexers I guess. Newzbin was probably the best, but sh!t happens. I’m using NZBsRUs right now. It’s great since the foldernames are listed instead of custom names.

NorskeDiv - May 19, 2010

I also wonder about that, base out of Russia or some less restrictive country. Problem is, perhaps if you live in the UK, you could still be caught up in their justice system even if you are not running the operation from there? I’m not sure about the specifics of that.

Too bad it’s gone though, first Halo 2 on X-Box live gets taken away, now a few months later Newzbin as well. What is the world coming to?

Rob - May 19, 2010

“What I don’t understand is why they are giving up so easily?”

huh? They are over £230,000 (USD $332,783) in the hole just defending themselves and you think they gave up easily? Idiot.

sadpanda - May 20, 2010

The LLC is that much in the hole, idiot. That means that company is, for all purposes, done. They, personally, owe nothing. That’s the whole fucking POINT of an LLC, idiot.

Anonymous Coward - May 19, 2010

I imagine that “newzbin.com” is owned by Newzbin Ltd, which faced with massive debts and no income pretty much had no choice but to call in the administrators, otherwise it would be facing yet another charge of trading while insolvent.

As the debts and the court case was brought against the company rather than the individuals running it, they are indeed more or less free to wander off and set up a new enterprise. The better question is, will they actually want to, now?

Loved newzbin in conjunction with SABnzbd+ best combo ever.

Never downloaded anything illegal but for me nntp speed is way better than http for some reason and downloading some huge linux/unix DVD images was always a lot faster via nntp.

Hope there is gonna be a new newzbin type site soon (I won’t mind paying for it) that has as good integration into SABnzbd+ (where I just had to bookmark posts and my server at home would start the downloads automatically).

228. assyM@ttrical - May 18, 2010

229. bigge9orge - May 18, 2010

OMG I’m shocked, I knew it was going to happen after the court case it was just a matter of time and it seems its that time is now.

R.I.P Newzbin thanks for the many wonderful downloads which I would never have purchased without a preview.

Shame you can’t or won’t release your code for the site, I for 1 would certainly take the reins and step in with a new site just a few legal aspects to consider so the same thing can’t happen again.

Post 140. Elvis – May 18, 2010

WTF get a life mate, Everyone who had credit on the site should be entitled to a refund, The service they have signed up to has not been completed so Newzbin are liable to either refund payments or face legal action again.
Could be a mass legal action against newzbin for not completing there part of the contract that people signed up to.

After the latest press articles detailing the massive income created by this site I am not at all impressed at the blatancy this company sprouted as to the site staying open to gain more money from customers.

Due to this fact I will be seeking a full refund from them even if I have to take legal action, they claimed that no matter what happens the site will not close then it closes after I have paid my money so they have failed in the contract.
I have screen captures of these posts to the site so have more than enough evidence if it ever gets to court.
Tough luck guys not enough on the ball to stop the crappy UK legal system hope you made some cash.

At an income of 1,000,000 someone somewhere has gotten very very fat and customers should be paid back for credit purchased.

As far as I am concerned I will take legal action against all who were responsible for the site until I receive a full refund of premiums paid.

233. Anon - May 18, 2010

What is a good list of alternatives?

I have been a member of newzbin for a looooooong time so I don’t even know that many other sites.

I used Newzleech.com and Binsearch.info because they had longer retention, however what I really liked about newzbin was the categories section. If I was just bored I could search through movies/games etc. that were already posted and choose something if I had nothing in mind. With sites like newzleech and binsearch, you pretty much need to know exactly what you are looking for. To anyone who responds, thanks in advance.

234. Motorcat - May 18, 2010

I absolutly love this site. I still hope they going to recover. I was happy enough to pay for a full year even though I was aware of the rumors. Thanks to the guys for the great work.

235. Hywel Da - May 18, 2010

Although this was a UK site, many American subscribers feel the loss.

I hope they will remember this the next time some self-righteous, pseudo-Christian uses the term “lawyered-up” or blames their woes on Mexican immigration and welfare recipients.

I hope that when a “true Amerikan” defends police who demand identification or “papers” they will remember the demands for presentation of a “Draft Card” and the courts’ decision that this was UNREASONABLE SEARCH.

I hope that they’ll remember this when computers are confiscated under the guise of “Homeland Security”.

I hope that they’ll remember this when people are imprisoned for decades for “possession” of pornography” and then branded “pedophile” upon release.

(Nor the “celebrities that flaunt YOUR money on red carpets)

In America, we once understood this and that’s why people from all over the world waited years to come here.
We forgot the admonishment of Ike and the freedoms we were fighting for.
I hoped the UK would have had more spine.

242. m0dnar - May 18, 2010

I have … strike that .. had been using Newzbin for over 3 years and had a hefty number of paid days left on my membership. However, I’m amused by the amount of people who are so surprised Newzbin was shut down.

Really now, how can you not see that it was inevitable from the moment they started charging people for the service? It was such a flawed and risky business model that, to be honest, it is surprising (the only thing that is actually surprising) that they took so many years to make it happen … it was pretty swift when it happened, but late to my expectations nonetheless. I knew it would happen ever since i paid my 1st subscription (but hell, it was cheap and made my leeching easier).

The moment you start profiting based on a service that can be twisted to be used for illegal purposes is the moment you start going downhill, regardless of whether you’re actually targeting/condoning/supporting/enabling illegal activities or not. You may not like it, in which case you may continue barking at the MPAA, RIAA etc.

Yeah, the code could be released as open source but if I was Newzbin I wouldn’t do that. The codebase they built could be used for something more worthwhile for them, e.g. a profitable company (which does not smell illegal) rather than 100 nzb websites which would continue to “index” 99% illegal material … even though, as a user, I would much prefer the latter.

For all the years that Newsbin provided information to us we should be thankful. As far as payments that had gone to them I for one would be willing to send them a contribution to help them out of their debt. I for one got way more from them than what I gave them in money.

Good Luck guys from Newsbin, keep your head up for years just think you were on top. There are thousands that have tried and can’t say that, unfortunantly all things come to an end.

248. John - May 18, 2010

I’d say it would be far too complex and expensive to go after the users.

Really not worth worrying about.

sadpanda - May 20, 2010

It’s also impossible to prove that you downloaded anything other than an NZB file. The fact you have the NZB does not by any means prove you downloaded the content indexed in that file. They’d have no case.

250. JimLurkme - May 18, 2010

Im back to the grand daddy of all indexing sites http://www.binnews.com

251. pend - May 18, 2010

Also if you can find out, did they (are they) clear their logs? Are users protected?

252. Ynys - May 18, 2010

Two points

1) The software Industry is certainly losing money from me now. Part of my daily routine was looking through the index of apps indexed on Newzbin and the amount of programs I downloaded that I had never heard of and found useful is endless. If they were useful and updated, I bought them – not anymore as their free advertisement has gone.

2) Anyone asking for their credit back needs to take stock of what complete and utter tw@ts they are. Bigger issues here than your measly couple of quid you f***wits

253. Dan - May 18, 2010

i cant believe all the people out there moaning about the loss of days and credit. when a company such as newzbin is being sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars. that provided everyone that has listed here with a service of such excellence. we should all turn our attentions to the mpa for infringing our rights to a freedom of infomation and also i am sure that over the years we have all had our monies worth of support and downloadable content of this site if anything we should now be helping newzbin to get back onto their feet and fight for thier right to stay online ….

Protip: making money off pirates makes you an even bigger target.

272. usakicksass - May 19, 2010

They never took more that $12 at a time it seemed. Considering all the free stuff I got still a bargain. Goddamn J$ws in hollywood. Fuck you whining shits. It was good while it was. Like Napster.

273. slayer99 - May 19, 2010

Jebus, everyone bitching about a few bucks. Seriously. I think I paid about $40 US over the last 4-5 years for a service I used daily. SFW if I had paid for another year in advance. It’s peanuts compared to what I got out of it. Stop farking whining.

That being said, I’d like to see Newzbin rise again in a different domain (and country). There are a ton of NZB sites that do the same things…but Newzbin was the easiest to use.

RIP Newzbin…you were great while you lasted.

274. corrsfan - May 19, 2010

The best thing about newzbin was they made it easy for two things….A computer dvr when using NZBTV, and for searching usenet either raw or condensed for the stuff that hadn’t been quite indexed yet. Plus I love how they were consistent with the naming of things.

275. BinFile - May 19, 2010

Dang, even newzxxx.com is down too!
[I jest, I jest]
Seriously tho – we all saw this coming, but it still sucks and I’m gonna miss Newzbin! -I hope the guys come through okay!!

WTF are these greedy corporations gonna do after they lay everyone off and no one can afford to consume their crap “entertainment”

278. master - May 19, 2010

people say they busted there ass to keep going? we don’t know what was actually said or done near the end. It seemed like they were restricted on listing items in the movie / TV section etc apparently?.

so why close completley, I noticed the admins never responded to any questions from users in the last 2 weeks?

It was a good service, and I used it alot for 6 years, but they made there £££ out of it, a million in the last year isn’t bad even with legal fees to be paid.

We don’t even know wether they were fined ? or if they had to keep quiet whilst any further judgements may of been made.

It would be nice to know exactly why they closed shop, especially the newzxxx.com domain?

279. AKo - May 19, 2010

Guys, who is Newzbin paying those huge sums of compensation for? They are supposed to make good for the loss of business for the industry, a loss that occurred because users, including those people like those indignantly demanding their few pence back, have used the service and downloaded material that the industry, as a result, sold less. So Newszin pays for their loss of projected income sue to such downloads, not for running the site as such. Now, in many contexts, fownloaders or commercial material have been put to court and fined, but in this caese, the only object of criminal proceedings was Newzbin, the site, as such. Newzbin have never given out names and anyway, the inductry naturally prefers bringing down a site more than its users. But what those punished paied for when they payed their legal team and what they now are supupose dto pay astronomical sums for, probaably for the rest of their lives, is not the site as such but how it was used by users: as a means to find and download content that they’d need to pay for in a shop. That includes users like those that now become indignant and want a few pennies back – what a bunch of cheap, narrowly, pathologically self-centered greedy, tunnel-vison, good-for-nothings! These are cases where I’d actually prefer people of that type of personality were to be tried as indivicuals, had to pay for their own defense, then go through all the trouble and, in the end, get fined and pay those compensations form their own pockets. Their share of the total could then be taken off the total compensation Newzbin’s expected required to pay. In return, they would of course, get their credits back, though I’m not sure it will get them far. Hell, it probably wouldn;’t cover for the Bus Fare to find a lawer…

Rather than thinking of getting or money back, we should rather try to see how thigns develop and offer to donate money so that, if it really remains so bad, the people who offered us this service for so long, may not have to pay the rest of their lives for offering us a service that might have lost the industry some money which they now want back from Newzbin. They lsot that money to us, of course, not Newzbin. So if anything, we should be thinking of supporting the guys to get out of the mess, rather than sticking the knife deeper by burdingine them with demands for micromanagement of tiny amounts of credict which, anyway, considering the amount of debt theyr’re in, they can in all likeliness illafford to justify paying back users, who are who costed the media industry money in the first place, rather than the industry who’ve won the legal confrontation.

280. ANONYMOUS - May 19, 2010

Lets keep a minute of silence in remembrance of newzbin. Indeed it is a sad day, as it is another large oppressive move from the lawyers. It it worrisome what will be next.

As for all you guy complaining of the money you paid newzbin, SHUT UP. It wasn’t that much, and everyone knew of their circumstances. They still have a troubled road to follow.

It’s a shame. MPAA and their ilk are paying millions suing companies over copyright infringement and then charging their customers to cover those costs. I had 250 days left in my account and I could care less. I got that back in a week of downloads. So the people that are whining about their not getting a refund.. as others have said it far better than I could… STFU you miserable losers.

If the MPAA machine would make their content available online in the same way that Newsbin did I’d sign up if the price was reasonable. Look at NetFlix.. $8.95 for a ton of stuff each month. The only problem is, I don’t want to wait 6 months or a year later to see shows or have to sit through brain numbing idiot commercials. That was the reason Newsbin was so great.

Not to excuse the MPAA for this action (because we know they are a bunch of greedy bastards) but I believe it’s tough to find creative solutions when everyone from the actors and unions to the executives want a bigger piece of a shrinking pie. But for crying out loud.. this is the 21st century.. get with the program and work it out and make your customers happy instead of wasting time alienating them with actions that are not going to net you a single dime. Because if anyone at the MPAA thinks that by shutting down Newsbin, we’re all going to run out and buy your DVD’s.. then y’all are dumber than we ever imagined.

’nuff said

Those cocky morons have only themselves to blame and their atrocious legal team. They were toast from the issuing of the judges verdict. What do expect with an inept reply by Caesium aka Mr. Elsworth such as this:
# I am satisfied that Mr Elsworth well knew that these categories were primarily intended for new commercial films. The position was confirmed a little later when Mr Elsworth was asked about a post in January 2007 in these terms: “looks like were going to need Blu-Ray attributes as Blu-Ray has been cracked officially”. Mr Elsworth accepted that he suspected that it meant that a way to make a copy of a Blu-Ray had been developed and then the following interchange took place (on Day 2 at 134):

Q. Yes. And you need a category for Blu Ray, or we need a category for Blu Ray, because Blu Ray has been cracked so now people will be copying movies off of Blu Ray so you need to deal with those. That’s what this post means, doesn’t it?
A. That does look like what that post means, yes.

Q. So that person has copyright infringement in mind?
A. No, I would not say that person had copyright infringement in mind. I would say that person looks like he just wants to report Blu Rays. He cites a reason for adding the Blu Ray category as they are being cracked but he does not cite a specific intention to report copyrighted Blu Rays.

Q. Well, what else would it be?
A. I don’t know.

Q. Why would it be Blu Rays that would need cracking?
A. I don’t know.

Q. You can’t come up with any explanation other than a copyright-protected commercial movie, can you?
A. No.

# In short, Mr Elsworth was unable to provide any explanation other than copyright infringement. [/quote]

321. Black Box - May 19, 2010

First off – everyone freaking out needs to chill about closing of Newsbin. Usenet and NNTP is not nor will ever die. The **AA just knocked over the biggest hornet’s nest it could find but if history teaches us anything in these matters, one goes down and several will be born from the ashes. You can be assured that where there is a will there will be a way. There will always be more of “us” than those who oppose us. Fair use was stripped away for most so pirates we became – so be it. If you really want to send a message back for these actions then I suggest the following: DO NOT supoort MPAA/RIAA lobbied industry. DO NOT buy bluray, DVD and CDs. Cancel your cable and satellite subscription. If you want to support your favorite content provider then find a way to do it directly. We want to be rid of these people. Finally, teach the noobs. Your brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, friends, everyone how to pirate digital content. Give them the power to “infringe” and send a clear message. We will stop pirating the second we die.

For those of you worried sick about the user database, here is Newzbin’s post a while back on this matter:

“Server logs and user activity Some subscribers are a little concerned about privacy in the light of the current litigation so to put their minds at rest we thought we would explain what the privacy implications are of our logs. We are currently keeping webserver logs for a period which is sufficient to allow us to defend ourselves against web attacks. However we cannot tell from our logs what NZBs you have downloaded. At all. If we can’t do this then neither can any complainant with access to our logs. Furthermore we rotate old logs so that they are deleted. No request has been made for our logs during the discovery phase of litigation and due to the nature of the legal process that request would have to have been made a long time ago: it wasn’t. They cannot now, legally, have it; and moreover they dont actually seem that interested either. The fact is this: they are gunning for Newzbin not you. Bottom line: We cannot tell anyone what NZBs you have been using whether those are for Linux distros, porn or just embarrassing lawful material. Don’t worry.”

Rest easy. Also, I did some research and see no indication of the RIAA or MPAA going after users with lawsuits en masse. Remember, Usenet is a download only medium, not an uploading one where content is distributed from users like P2P.

331. usenet admin - May 19, 2010

I’m sure the mpaa is celebrating like idiots. I just opened 6 more nzb index sites in my browser and found what I wanted without losing even 1 second of time.

The more you fight the more you’ll lose.

There will be 1000+ nzb index sites using open source code in the next week. 10000 by the week after.

It’s not about stealing your content, it’s about being able to use it when and how I want to. The days of having iron clad control over content are long gone. Wake up and join the rest of us in reality.

Long Live Newzbin! I dearly loved my Newzbin and gladly donate my remaining credits to their cause. I suggest that the same community needs to organize the exodus to a worthy successor. Any ideas?

335. Nunya - May 19, 2010

Not only am I *not* upset about losing my “credit” with them, I wanted to “top up” after they stopped taking payments just to donate to the cause. R.I.P Newzbin May 2010

337. Dean Johnson - May 19, 2010

I went ahead and paid for an extra year even though I knew they didnt have a good chance against the MPA. I am fine with Newzbini keeping my money.

However, I did suggest on the board that if the money is going to be paid to the MPAA that I would like a refund. I dont know mind putting money towards their council (which did a horrible job) but I dont want the money I paid going to the MPA.

The MPA is using extortion to get more money out of it’s biggest clients.

I own a large collection of VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, and Blu Ray but the Big Three Media companies keep coming out with different formats (3DTV now) and expects people to keep paying top dollar for the same product and yet feel that DRM is fine.

I am all for people purchasing (or renting via Netflix) but the MPA needs to get with the times and realize many people have a better experience in their living room with a nice home theater system and would be glad to pay for new releases if they could them legally.

The Netflix Streaming HD movies is a start but their selection is too limited due to the outrageous price Hollywood wants for the rights to the movies.

The MPA is in a situation they cannot win. They cannot sue everyone and need to look at their business model and adjust as the Record Indsutry did.

Charge people about $40 dollars a month to watch unlimited movies even if via streaming in HD with a godo choice and many people will be thrilled with that.

They cannot stop piracy so the best option is to compete with a superior product and a legal way for people to watch new releases at home.

This is the same company that tried to stop the VCR because they were worried people would record shows.

Time to get with the 20th century and then move into the 21st century like everyone else has.

per “http://www.usenetshack.com/newzbin-reaches-end-its-hearing-court-verdict-expected-around-easter/”

The second point is user privacy. One thing the Claimants did complain about was that Newzbin “deliberately arranged it’s systems so that no user details were available: even if we got an Anton Pillar there would be nothing to seize as no logs were kept”. They were correct on that. No user needs worry about their privacy being violated by logs. Equally, since the site has lawful non-infringing use (our hunch is that the judge accepted our arguments on this: he seemed receptive to our submission that GPL, Creative Commons & non-copyright works were on the Indexes) a mere membership of Newzbin proves nothing against any user: the Claimants didn’t contend this anyway.

Claimants did complain about was that Newzbin “deliberately arranged it’s systems so that no user details were available: even if we got an Anton Pillar there would be nothing to seize as no logs were kept”. They were correct on that. No user needs worry about their privacy being violated by logs.
a mere membership of Newzbin proves nothing against any user: the Claimants didn’t contend this anyway.

351. Rick - May 19, 2010

Fuckin Rip off. I hope they sue these motherfuckers into bankruptcy. I just renewed for a year before they stopped renewals and when I messaged them they said all was ok.

Gonna contact my CC company and file a complaint as well.

352. danshop - May 19, 2010

its sad to see them shutdown. but i’ve been using NZBmatrix for awhile now. but the problem now is NZBmatrix is overloaded with people downloading from there. the server is down and i need my FIX soon.

I’ve google a few alternative to this problem of ours and found

http://www.nzbtvseeker.com/ which is free and no need to sign up for anything. but still needs a lot of work. i think this the future and we should support it.

354. OneSadUser - May 19, 2010

Some of you relate this to losing a good friend,
I agree… Today is a sad day…
If money is what it takes to get Newzbin back up, I’m sure it would have it’s supporters; I know I would try to help out a community that gave so much.

355. chironaphel - May 19, 2010

Anyone looking for their money back are idiots (and ingrates). The Payment Terms explicitly stated they kept no records of the payment information. This was touted as a good thing because, if they were hacked or lost a court case, they could not identify their customers. An obvious side effect is that they themselves have no way of knowing who their customers are either. Because of this it is technically impossible to refund any money because they don’t know who is owed anything. The only way yo get your money back, you whiners, is to in effect self-identify to the MPAA, you want that?

I’ll miss Newzbin, I never pay for anything additional, Newzbin was the exception.

356. elle - May 19, 2010

357. Dirty - May 19, 2010

Fight the new world order! Newzbin wasn’t offering files for download just indexes that shouldn’t be illegal. Corporations are using the united states government to get what they want. In this case exerting force on a British court. It’s called fascism. USA is the center of it all. Fight the police state!

360. 616e6f6e - May 19, 2010

I always thought Newzbin would triumph over this bollocks, it’s a damn shame.

If they’d open source the site code things might not be so bleak for us. It’s not like it’s any use to them now anyway.

Sad times indeed 😦

361. Joe - May 19, 2010

whoever said they were giving up this easily?

i remember several years ago there was a NFO posting site called ISOnews (or something similar. its been a long time)

they were sued, and instead of dealing with the long drawn out process they closed their doors

magically within a few days a link to another site (nfohump) appeared, and was very similar to the isonews code.

a public display can be far different than whats happening behind the scenes.

362. Dan - May 19, 2010

Very sad. You guys were the best. You will be greatly missed. I can’t believe anyone is griping about a few dollars (in my case) lost. We know you guys tried your best at great personal cost (both financial and emotional). Thank you for the good years you were around. All the best in the future…

363. Dean Johnson - May 19, 2010

Sorry for the addtional post but I see people slamming on people who request a refund. I for one did not request a refund but would prefer one if the money is going straight to the MPA. I dont mind if it is going to council and operating expenses.

However, it is not a lot of money even if someone renewed for a year, I do think NEWZBIN SHOULD REFUND MONEY if requested.

I am sorry but this is just good business. Just because someone asked for a refund does not make them a jerk.

A lot of people were very dissapointed in the fact that Newzbin mocked the MPA on their website during the trial and told their attorneys how to argue the case instead of letting the attorney handle the legal battle in their way.

Newzbin can keep my money for about 1 year rrrmaining but lets not slam thosoe who request refunds.

it was good while it lasted but i dont understand all the debt
i understand they now ow leagal fees and most likly a fine but a company that boasted 1/4 a million memebers world wide the sums dont add up as they must of been loaded
i was a memeber for 8 years
£17 member ship a year X 250,000 = £8,840,000 per year cash + there comision from giga news what a cash flow
with a 250,000 fine and half a million in debt they should be able to clear that with easy
i think some of that money must of been swifted away some ware

381. Down With the MPAA! - May 19, 2010

I don’t understand how they ever got shut down.

First off they didn’t host nor supply any illegal downloads of any sort. All they did was provide a “visual road map” of Usenet. If you gave someone directions to a drug dealers house, that doesn’t make you a buyer or a seller just someone giving directions.

It’s obvious that someone “created” some new laws to give them the power they needed and it’s just a shame that type of control exist in this country.

As for the “logs” who give a shit. So I downloaded some “NZB’s”… Doesn’t mean I used them. Good luck proving that one in court Mr. Fed.

382. ScraperJB - May 19, 2010

It’s rediculous because here in the US, piratebay.org is throwing up their middle fingers to the entertainment industry, and they actually make money off advertising. Newzbin was a collection of movie, music, and television lovers. I feel like an addict who’s detoxing. Sick.

shame to see it go

I don’t want my money back, but Arnold sort of has a point

Newzbin wasn’t some sort small-time operation with a bloke in his bedroom doing the site out of the goodness of his heart.

The company made ****loads of money, the people running the company got a ****load of money and the chances are the MPAA won’t get their fine because the people running the company have taken it all (their accounts are in the publoc domain – just see how much they’ve had in the bank)

I loved Newzbin but please don’t make them out to be some sort of saint – they were a business that enjoyed the good times and now it’s all over

Heres a useful link to help you find a new usernet group

It was an incredible site and would have saved you the money otherwise, anyway, with the compmnay owing over 700k i dont think they are going to get around to refunding your money!

Just thank them and wish them good luck, it wasnt their fault users posted illegal content, why should they get the blame?

398. asfdasdf - May 19, 2010

It is all lies.

The software doesn’t cost $700K.

There are other search engines with much higher retention (which is the main complexity factor here) written by couple of guys in their spare time.

They just took the loot and run away.

I just joined Newzbin about a year ago, and all I can say is, “Thanks.” I think I’ve gotten more than just files from this site. Using this every single day has made me more aware of my computer and, as a result, I’m know so much more about my comp. It’s stupid but, it meant a lot to me. I’m such a newbie to all of this I don’t even know where to turn to now……Such a sad sad day 😦

414. Dani - May 19, 2010

So many misinformed or ignorant posts here today…

Just to clear up some misconceptions; if as has been reported Nezbin has declared itself insolvent (or has been put into bankruptcy by a third paty), then they *cannot* refund any money, it’s illegal. A reciever will be appointed and they will take over the running of the company, pay creditors (assuming there is money in the bank etc.) and decide what to do from there.

As for records being public, well to a degree they are, but you will have to pay for a report from companies house. You can see a list of reports and names of directors and company secretaries etc. just with a lookup though (http://tinyurl.com/2cko6rd and enter “Newzbin Limited”).

Finally, while I was a subsciber myself and really appreciated the effort and work the guys put in, don’t kid yourselves into thinkng Newzbin was in some way a benevolent charity. Newzbin was a profit making business which aimed to make money (not that there is anything wrong with that, we all deserve to get paid for our work).

I suppose we all knew it was bound to happen at some point. Still don’t take the sting out of it though!
We ALL got much more than our money’s worth out of them many times over I’m sure. The price we paid was a pittance compared to the money we saved. If you wanna be angry with anyone, be angry at the MPA! We all knew what a bargain we were getting for those measly few pounds we spent over the years! Lets just hope that they get reincarnated as s similar site (with similar costs!), and we will all be happy.
So long guys, thanks for everything & good luck with the bastards, don’t let them get you down!

As for those that say there should have been some warning “well come on they been in court how long”. So give your thanks to newzbin for top service and for not releasing there db, as im sure this would twitch some arses in a big way.As i work a lot newzbin was the easiest way for me to catch up on what i missed tv/documentries ect…Have my credit in fact if i could get on the site i bloody donate them something by buying 1years credit, if we all had done this maybe they would have used the extra to fight longer. It has been said time and time again this wasn’t a little man in a hut, it was a company and they need to be earning money.

stop moaning about the money you “lost”.

we all had our moneys worth, and if you dont think you did, then you’re thicker than the MPA who think this is going to go away.
there atre hundreds of sites out there, granted not as many as good as newzbin, but they are never going to stop it.
this wouldnt be necessary if people weren’t so greedy.
why would you pay someone 20 million to act in a film??? you then have to recoup that money from joe public, along with the cost of making the film etc. try bringin the costs down, then you might not have to charge us so much, and then we may stop filesharing.

those cunts (MPAA, et al) can lick my anus.

where am I going to download my Debian isos from now? Bittorrent?

Seriously.. I don’t understand how they could deem the indexing service illegal.. probably just too much of a cunt to go after the individuals posting, so just take down the site indexing it.

Kill the big beast, you kill the scene.

maybe they should try suing carriers for allowing the protocol through their network?

now they can start serving up infringement notices on isp subscribers exposing themselves via bittorrent, as opposed to the one-way retrieval from usenet.

the MPAA can seriously go and suck some cum/shit-drizzled cock.

On a side note.. what sort of impact will this have on the news hosting companies? If I can’t get my shit from an alternate source, I’m shutting down my $300 USD/year account.

444. Mongo - May 19, 2010

I have no regrets.. Instead of a DVR I watched my shows the next day via usenet using NZBs I got from Newzbin. Technically illegal I guess because I don’t have to press FF to skip the lame ass commercials most of us hate.

And oh yeah I am guilty of downloading mp3s of albums I do own because grabbing them at 40Mbit was easier than reripping the cds, having to swap discs etc for the sake of time.

RIP NEWZBIN, hope the site is the only thing that really took a hit.

445. Yenc Poster - May 19, 2010

As a frequent contributor to newsgroups, I won’t miss the extra attention sites like this provided my material. I feel a little safer now. Good Riddance.

446. KTC - May 19, 2010

RIP newzbin, best usenet site ever…

and will all you cheap idiots stop complaining about getting your money back… the amount they charged is like 2 hamburgers a year, or a beer at a pub… I’m not rich, but 10 bucks wont make or break me, and I KNOW that it wont break any of you either. Take a SINGLE nzb from them, and I guarantee you SAVED that much money, making the rest of the year pay for itself.

Tried to keep the swears out of that, it was hard, you ‘money back’ people really are getting on my nerves

That being said, I am all for opensource, there is a great community of fellow computer nerds out there that i have full confidence in. And as much as I would like not paying for the service, I hope whoever hosts it ends up charging like newzbin does, to weed out all the 13 year old kids who will end up ruining an otherwise amazing community.

I was 5x less sad when the original napster went down, and then again when oink.cd went down (the only other two that I actually cared about). sad day in internet history 😦

447. Detroit-MI - May 19, 2010

Can’t believe some of the guys on hear moaning about money, Quite sad really. To the guys at Newzbin thanks for letting me keep up with the times from the usa and crating my own Tv station, instead of watching the rubbish over here – guess I’m a frustrated yank at heart lol. Good times sure you will rise again wink wink.

450. asfdasdf - May 19, 2010

Court documents give a perhaps surprising insight into the size of the Newzbin business. Its accounts for 2009 reveal that it turned over in excess of £1 million, yielded a profit of more than £360,000 and paid dividends on ordinary shares of £415,000. It has around 700,000 members.

451. wobblymatt - May 19, 2010

Newzbin will be sorely missed.
I’ve just spent all afternoon downloading headers 😦
Why don’t the MPA shut down Giganews and Astraweb instead?
You were the best Usenet indexing site ever & I hope you rise from the flames one day!
As another poster said: “So long and thanks for all the fish!”
Keep my credits might buy you a pint!

Patrick - May 19, 2010

Giganews and Astraweb are providers, and we DO NOT want those shut down.

wobblymatt - May 19, 2010

My sentiments entirely, but why attack the indexing sites and not the providers who host the filez?

Patrick - May 19, 2010

I don’t think providers can be brought down due to the nature of the posts they receive. Someone who knows the ins and outs of the law should be able to weigh in.

455. Scoundrelking - May 19, 2010

Please, let poor Newzbin use that (seriously NOMINAL) fee to combat whatever legal fees they are accruing. They have taken a bullet for all of us. It’s so sad that it had to go this way.

However you can never discount the Hydra effect. Cut off one head, and two more pop up in its place. We have seen this same thing when sites like Supernova or Oink went down.

Newzbin: you have been excellent, comprehensive, and progressive. It’s a shame that the MPAA didn’t like what was written in the book but was too illiterate to bother to read it, so they had to take it out on the Table of Contents.

PS: As I’m sure someone from Newzbin will be reading these, as they linked to it… Open Source that code. Information wants to be free. There are some incredibly smart legal-minds and programming-powers out there who could really use your research and code as a head start. When Bush shut down stem cell research did the US just throw it all in the trash and say, “my bad?” Nah, we outsourced it to brilliant European scientists until there was a regime change and a smarter, more intelligent figure was in power. Even if they’ve got it in a legal quagmire at the moment, there’s always the possibility that that code could… I dunno… leak out somewhere. Thanks for everything. I’m sure we’ll see you again soon. ❤

456. Scoundrelking - May 19, 2010

PPS: I’m sure some of us would be willing to donate what little we can to help too. Set up a paypal fund and there are plenty of us would donate at least the cost of a beer, or a sandwich.

457. martin - May 19, 2010

i hope they get held personally resposible – “Caesium”, “Freaky” and “Kalente”

i would honor there great work, but they just were all about the money. this site could be easily run for free but there wouldnt be ONE MILLION POUND turnover a year either.
they used the editors as free labour, and let the money come in.

the main work for NZB was done by JOERG BITTERMAN (google him) a german software engineer. he left newZbin very early after developing the NZB system. the scum “Caesium”, “Freaky” and “Kalente” used it to make PROFITS.

I know you guys loved the site, but dont defend them, its them who fucked you.

Shame lads, declare your selves bankrupt and laugh your fucking arse off. Me personally I’d restart the company under a slightly different name with different company heads, just to piss off the MPAA.

That said though, Newzbin is just an indexing site, all the content is still on usenet!!! It’s just a matter of finding it.The Newsleecher software does a decent “super search” tool which I often use.

Think about it, it’s the user’s who make the site, they do all the hard work.

When will the MPAA realise they simply cannot win because real shit doesn’t die, it multiplies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cough, cough…. NAPSTER!!!

465. Bob - May 19, 2010

Let’s not kid ourselves. This was bound to happen sooner or later. The main point of Newzbin was so that we could all get copyrighted material easily and for free. It stands to reason that the owners of such material would try and put a stop to it. I don’t blame them. But I will miss Newzbin.

Been saying that about music for a decade now, can still get free music instantly.

Difference is the music industry actually got involved and created legitimate and competitive means to obtain music legally.

The movie industy needs to follow suit, £20 for a blue ray movie is a rip off and when they give people a genuinely competitive product they will sell more.

481. just some one else who doesn't really care that the site is gone - May 19, 2010

lol… I use super search.

anyone who relies on newzbin for their fix is a fool.

Barbara - May 19, 2010

If you say something like that it shows you don’t understand some of the reasons for Newzbin.

It allowed cryptically titled uploads to be identified – you cannot identify them using Super Search unless you want to download EVERYTHING and identify it yourself. Totally impractical to do that. Further, passwords were provided by users for passworded files. Movies with incorrect NFO;s were updated with corrected user input. Fakes were identified. Propers were linked to defectives. Languages were listed properly. Results of virus multi-scans listed on warez. And dozens of other functions were supported. None of this can be done with a bare bones search! The loss of NewZbin will not be made up for soon – not with NZBmatrix, or any of the others.

I only know of one site which seems to be trying to duplicate the full functionality of Newzbin and that is NGindex.com, but they are small and it is uncertain how successful they will be. But take a look at it, at least.

in repsonse to my response - May 21, 2010

Fair comment Barbara, but I’m sticking with my point, ‘but’ I’ll rephrase my ‘fools’ comment.

The majority of newzbin users were people who were ‘technically lazy’ and did not take the time to search in the places where ‘legit’ group release posts originated from, they simply used newzbin and the xxx sister site for their extremely well organised newsgroup post listings and the accompanying NZB files.

If you use supersearch the right way, sure it may take all of 5 seconds to track down ‘what’ you want in an IRC channel or from a free, well organised website (I use three, two of which have been around for well over 10 years), but then you get exactly what you are looking for, and can even message the actual person who posted what you download if there is a problem! Also, you don’t get viruses, you don’t get fake posts, and you don’t get movies with hardcoded subs (unless you want them)! Also supersearch finds exactly what you want, and lists nothing else (if used correctly with an index code)(although some groups are now using the same index codes but again they are clearly marked so as to not download an incorrect item), so there’s no downloading whole group indexes, ie alt.bins.mm for example, lol, last time I remember looking at an index listing for that group the index files was something like 4gb! (and that was a long time ago) I dread to think how big an index file for that group is now, especially with 600+ days retention!

Newzbin was good but certainly not perfect! I also know for a fact they didn’t list everything that was posted, so it was not the best at listing what was available (but then no site is ‘that’ perfect) and I also know many people grabbed NZB’s, thinking they were being ‘safe’ only to have their PC infected with a trojan or worm, or got a movie with no audio or the most common problem, they got a film with hardcoded ‘dutch subs’ lol… all courtesy of newzbins lack of awareness, which, was solely left to admins (who worked for ‘free’) to report (and who often didn’t, as comments were often posted by downloaders)! But I suppose when you download warez, pre release movies and mp3s off a site aimed at offering cracked software and pre-release media what does one really expect! 😀

I took a look at your site recommendation and it does look good, but I now refuse to pay to such sites, when I know the information required is out there and it’s ‘free’, sticking to my original point… an indexing site charging for NZB files is a bit like going to a supermarket to do your weekly shopping and then giving your list to some guy at the door and waiting for him to get your groceries, paying him for doing what you could have done yourself, and then going home!

I was a member of newzbin from w-a-y back and have been using newsgroups since the early 1990’s … back in the day man, as they say… so maybe I’m just an old timer and stuck in my ways?

482. Newzbin lives - May 19, 2010

Newzbin is not dead. It is starting over again small and hidden. They want to get back to their grassroots and keep a strong small loyal user base away from the mass conglomerate of petty people it has turned into.

483. Ino - May 19, 2010

I find this realy unfortunate, as Newzbin was one off the best out there if not the Best! I never had to search another Site to get what I wanted.. I just hope they’ll be back someday, you never know! If not please Open op your Source and let someone else run it with you or something. And as for as far as “Illigal” can go.. That wasn’t Illigal as it was just an “Index” site as some said.

Hope to find a site just like Newzbin ( Or come back to it! )
If anyone has a great site as in the style off Newzbin, please Mail me @ Nodrulez@hotmail.com / Thank you!

486. AngrySmurf - May 19, 2010

The writing has been on the wall for a few months now, so I figured this was coming, and the Newzbin guys were honest and up front as can be, while also doing right by users in freezing all accounts, and taking no further money from anyone, so those that begrudge them the odd handful of dollars that each of us lost are, in a word, pricks. Truth is I’ve never seen a site crisis and possible impending shutdown handles with as much thought for the users than what happened here.

I would like someone to come out and say that none of our user records or financials have been retained or passed on to anyone else though, just to put everyone’s minds at ease on that particular subject.

Thank you anonymous people of newzbin for all you added to the scene, and may all involved at least walk away clean at the end of the day.

492. Fred Flintman - May 19, 2010

“To be honest, the quality and quantity of posts had deteriorated a lot over the past 2 years or so… maybe it was time for them to go”

Totally agreed. Very very very useful site but not all of the editors were doing a great job cataloging and that was getting annoying.

Barbara - May 19, 2010

I agree too. Coverage of specialty groups, like manga, had ceased when key specialists went on to form boutique sites elsewhere. 0-day scene had fallen to a trickle, much of it being faked by virus planters. Obviously, it was the editors who were responsible for much of the quality and many had already left.

in repsonse to my response - May 21, 2010

the groups are still out there, thankfully… but they are not as public as they used to be… I don’t know whether that’s the groups personal choice, or that they lost followers due to lack of interest, but with a little ‘fun’ digging they can be found.

the editors only got free access to the site and not a penny more… If they had been payed on a commission based rule, then I guarantee lot more would have been listed! Plus not all the editors were accurate with their postings!

someone-else - May 22, 2010

I’m (better, I was) Editor, and I’ve done 100s Bluray reports… I think my job has be accurate (posting passwords for more than 200 posts too…). Sometimes some post may be wrong, but that doesn’t mean that the job is inaccurate.

Yes, I subscribe to that they used editors to do the job, but I knew it…

Based on my experience I think that it should be possible to do the same site whit not very much effort… The layout was very similar to TikiWiki, and TikiWiki (up to version 3, I think) had a module to connect to usenet…

I send some request to develop some new features, but they never close the ticket (don’t know if They read it)…

One interesting feature they didn’t want to develop was a module to upload NZB (founded in some forum) to generate reports… some posts are with multiples files, each one renamed to something… It keep lot of time to generate reports…. Why did they have not spent a little bit of money to do that?

‘comn.. someone(else) want to make it free? just implement tikiwiki! 😉

someone-else - May 22, 2010

Just to make it clear… I DON’T LIKE TIKIWIKI!
I just sayd that it should be possible… The code looks like Windows code 😉
N.B. Drupal can do same job with a not very much added effort.

493. MadHatter - May 19, 2010

Open Source. It’s on it’s way and will allow for many Newzbin clones to setup quickly. The existing NZB’s should be included, but not sure how much of the site was able to be grabbed. Either way, these can be re-generated.

A collaborative approach would be best (many sites, different tld’s working together sharing sub’s) and allow for this type of closure never to happen again.

I’m looking into http://www.ngindex.com/. From what I can tell their servers are in Malaysa. Good luck to the MPAA coordinate a lawsuit that crosses jurisdictions with that country. A US/UK combo was easy. I just discovered this site and a visual trace route says they are in Malasia. I don’t know how good they are so this isn’t an endorsement or an advertisement.

good luck to the guys at newzbin, i had a great service from you for 6 years 😉

510. Caterpillar - May 19, 2010

I considered topping up to be a donation as we all knew this was going to happen.

Of course it just makes other sites richer. The MPA probably will have no problem with sites in USA/UK/CA but will run into major problems wit sites in other countries with not as favorable of laws.

I am not sure the MPA really wants to stop piracy. I think they simply want to sue every indexing site and get as much cash as they can.

This just seems to be their new business model.

The Movie Industry is making RECORD PROFITS yet still keep showing the anti-piracy commericals.

Why dont they show a FAT Producer in his 40 million dollar house saying he only made 80 million dollars last year

The MPA only has Sequels and cheap 3D added after the movie is made as an excuse to raise ticket prices.

They should just sit down and chill because the MPAA are in a loosing battle.

As for my remaining Credit Newzbin Staff Earned it.

Well Done guys Thanks For Every Thing

512. whatever - May 19, 2010

a) quit snitching
b) quit flapping at people who are mad. i paid money because they’re supposed to stay “UP” by using my $
c) they waited just enough time for me personally to not be able to dispute the charge. 118 days is the maximum time you have to dispute through VISA. Probably it is the same for the rest of the credit cards. Pretty much everyone who was taking advantage of the “holiday” pricing got hit by this. I pay them on December 28th and they stop indexing around the end of January I think? or was it February…

Bah! - May 19, 2010

LMAO – You think your l33t skills can find these sites but the MPA can’t? Topsites get taken down without a great deal of hastle… so finding a website really isn’t that tricky. Also… Can’t believe you and all these others bean counters bitchin about lost subs! Newzbin made money out of warez, you paid for this service, you new that it was illegal… Accept that fact that Newzbin provided us all with a great service for years (2nd to none in fact) and you got lots of cool stuff for next to nothing! throughout the whole process newzbin has protectected your privicay! I lost almost a years worth of subs, when i purchased those i new what the outcome of the case would be… and if i met any of guys who ran the site in the pub… i’d buy em drinks all night and still feel like i’d got the better end of the deal…

Your types are the scum of the scene, best get your arse down to the nearest car boot sale and flog some warez to recover your lost subs!

For the rest who appreciate what we’ve got and remember how things were back in the BBS days… Look out for invite only clones pooping up soon! ;o) Just got to track down a copy of the code…

513. The Invisible Man - May 19, 2010

Well that sux

i would just like to say thanx to whoever created that awesome site, i am hugely grateful for the media you have provided me with, as should everyone else be.
i have been using newzbin since i first discovered usenet more than 5 years ago, in a time when i had to download the headers and search through huge lists of articles (couldnt afford to pay wen i was 14).
I have jumped to and from NZB download sites but always ended up back at newzbin, there was just no beating it, it was perfect and i will be lost without it.
im just sorry it had to end like this.

514. Nmd - May 19, 2010

Lol @ Whatever.. The price you pay is a measly sum anyway so quit your fucking whinging. Just think of all the shit you’ve downloaded with the help of that site over the years.

Long live the Newzbin creators and fans, it was a blast while it lasted; for now I’ve found another indexer site. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Personally, I would pay more to the guys @ newzbin to help them with their debts, simply because of the great service they’ve provided over the years. That kind of site builds a community, and the fact that you’re here bitching about your £12 or so just shows that the real place you should be looking for your downloads is on google, searching for fuckin mp3s. You n00b!

515. Dean4e - May 19, 2010

These were my boyz, my homies and part of my history……

520. Caterpillar - May 19, 2010

Forget about the money for now.

Here is one question that people need to ask:

What is the goal of the MPA?

Are they really trying to stop piracy or are they just trying to make as much money as possible by extorting money from websites like Newzbin?

Will the MPA go after the Usenet providers?

The only thing the MPA has done is to get more publicity on the usenet (which most people know nothing about) and prove that indexing specific parts of the usenet is illegal in the UK when you bring in a whole legal team to fight a small company.

521. fartflanger - May 19, 2010

526. Justanother downloader - May 19, 2010

Sad, but hey, it happens.

12 pounds to use the service, when I consider how little 12 pounds is, I have no capacity to whine. Those whining are indeed cheap bastards. We’ve all seen your kind online. No one likes you.

But I have lived by the belief nothing is forever online. If you get more than 5 years out of ANY aspect of online activity, consider it a fluke.

I’ve lost track of how many things have been all the rage, only to disappear replaced by something else.

Newzbin is gone. I will live.

There WILL be something to replace it.

527. Mark - May 19, 2010

Damn .

What can i say we have used newzbin over and over again and now there is no newzbin left.
I hope the script will appear on the binaries so others can contineu the best way ever.

528. Synaesthesia - May 19, 2010

I’m sure some of us remember what happened when Supernova closed. A dozen more sites opened up (You would think they’d learn their lesson). Every crisis is an opportunity for growth, so I’m told.

As far as make-up artists and hair stylists and special effects guys go, they get paid whether the movie or show is a hit or not. The mpaa isn’t losing money! I’d never, ever, pay money to see the garbage Hollywood is putting out these days, and I’m sure I’m not alone. At least, when we watch movies/shows or try programs, our opinions aren’t tainted by having spent a lot of money to see it or experience it to begin with.

Thanks for providing Newzbin so long guys! Much appreciated!

536. Corniche - May 19, 2010

The old definition of “chutzpah” was this: a man murders his mother and father and then begs for mercy from the court on the grounds that he is an orphan.

The NEW definition of chutzpah is the thief who stole thousands of dollars worth of intellectual property and then complained that his pusher ripped off his bus money.

Just an example: “c) they waited just enough time for me personally to not be able to dispute the charge. 118 days is the maximum time you have to dispute through VISA. Probably it is the same for the rest of the credit cards. Pretty much everyone who was taking advantage of the “holiday” pricing got hit by this. 541. Meltd0wn - May 19, 2010

I wish all of you would just STFU. Gather headers yourself and quit fucking whining. There are many “pay-for” and “free” indexing sites to choose from. Nothing lasts forever so get over it. Who cares what the MPAA is trying to do. I really don’t give a flying fuck. News servers around the world aren’t going to go away any time soon so enjoy it like I have been since 1996. Reading these posts proves to me that the majority of you have no clue WTF you’re even talking about. Piss off and set yourself on fire, please.

543. MPA - May 19, 2010

You think Newzbin didn’t give up the logs in order to strike a deal? They will not protect criminal activities and if found guilty will be punished to fullest extent of the law. MPA will have to set an example with certain individuals to send a message to public that this sort of behaviour is unacceptable.

F the RIAMPA - May 19, 2010

There were no logs, dumbass. You can still view the court documents in pdf.

The Legion of Anonymous - May 20, 2010

The MPA can eat out my asshole. I WISH they’d come after me using the Newzbin rolls. Seriously. All this does is make me absolutely more committed to circumventing their bullshit BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. The money I’ve poured into DVDs, Netflix, Pay-per-views, theaters, subscriptions and so on is incredible. These types of actions cause me to want to cancel ALL legal forms of delivery and focus all my efforts on free downloading. All the MPA is doing is alienating the public and creating a legion of anarchist-minded individuals that are doggedly committed to shumping them up the ass. If they think bringing down Newzbin is going to stop P2P they have a very rude awakening coming. They have already gone after Usenet companies and been roundly and completely drubbed. They have won this battle, but the war will be ours and their comeuppance will be epic.

MPAA still doesnt get it… well the music and video industry doesnt get it. Whos not willing to pay for music and video online? See how many users Newzbin had, how many have paying usenet providers. They just dont have a good business model and want u to pay f*cking 15 euro (or something i dont know the last time i bought an) album or DVD. Make it cheaper, lots more users will start using ur service…

RIP Newzbin and i wish u good luck in court!!!!

549. Drustan - May 19, 2010

Sad to see Newzbin go. Made indexing so easy, no trawling. ahh man back to mIrc and bots. Was a mod at packetnews, now I see thats gone. How times have changed. So the code is out there…..pity because there will be a lot of crap sites will pop up looking for £….what project is he working on?

550. Wizard - May 19, 2010

Fuckers fuckers fuckers, when will the MPA assholes ever realize they are not losing money to someone who can’t afford to pay for there nazi priced bullshit!

If I can’t afford it and can’t buy it, but download it how the fuck are they loosing money to that?

Maybe to others who can afford it, but chose to download instead ya, but that does not give a rats ass, we have no rights and what happens when you push someone to a corner? They get back and that is what we pirates and non pirates are doing; you have that money, because of us; without us you would be none!

Now, you have money to win in any court battle; you have your DMCA and our money and what left have you left us with?
The most powerful tool in the world. The internet!

Fuckers, you pushed the last consumers in the corner for the last time you pieces of shit. I hope this breeds more pirates then they can shake money at!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never used newzbin, it was down for open registration before I got usenet. However, I can’t see their system being out of the ordinary extraordinary. Other sites offer categories, filtering, etc. Hell I’m a programmer I would be happy to write the functions it offers for another site but I don’t know what it did. Try out nzbmatrix, gingadaddy, nzbsrus, etc. The nzb format is open so what else is so great about it.

lost newbie - May 24, 2010

Hi, My friend downloaded some automotive software from Newzbin and would never show me what i need to download and make those files work. You say that you use Usenet? Any chance you can tell me if i need anything special to download files. I am not comuter savy that much but good advice and i can find my way though it. This was a great indexing service and saved lazy me all the time it’s now taking me to manually sort through my news server.
You did nothing wrong in indexing publically available information and you save me tons of time manually sorting through the internet pile of crap.
Bless you guys and hope to see you up and running elsewhere soon.
Does someone need to rent a place in Denmark and help you out?
I’m sure someone out here would do that for you
Very much appreciate all you did for us as the other sites look childish compared to how your search engines worked !!

Might be worth being cautious.Rumours about a founder of Newzbin being behind it have not been proved.

Also, the site is in the USA, so it’s either there to avoid Newzbin type problems or for a more sinister reason.

Just think twice before you sign up. After all, there are plenty of other sites around.

I AM that broke and I wish I could have done more. Newzbin was a great site with great people behind it. It was stated that they didn’t keep any records of users and only kept the payment records long enough to process the payments. The MPAA doesn’t really give two shits about us at this point anyway. I got my moneys worth in the first week of using them. That was one bill I never leg lag and never minded paying. They did a great service for a great number of people.

567. GoBears - May 20, 2010

I can’t believe that people are pissed that they lost money when they “previewed” a lot of content thanks to this wonderful site. How sad.

One Blu-Ray disc costs more than a year’s membership.

568. Caterpillar - May 20, 2010

Why would the MAA set up fake NZB sites? I dont put it past them but downloading NZB files is not illegal.

569. dodgy brothers - May 20, 2010

just a tip for anyone shitting themselves out there – if anyone from the MPAA or the feds comes knocking to your door as a result of this, just state that u have an unsecured wireless connection. They can’t prove it was u so they cant touch u.

heard it from the horses mouth and makes sense 🙂

570. FUKNDOIT - May 20, 2010

574. Jessica - May 20, 2010

I’m bummed about the site closing.. though not shocked.. When I first heard about the legal issues I topped up to 3 years.. I did that just because I wanted to give my fair share knowing there was a good chance the site would be shut down all together.
I feel like their service was worth it, and worth my support.
Unlike many on here, I’ve actually purchased more DVD’s and software since I started using Newzbin as I wont buy something I can’t try or return. Put a return policy on movies so we can return them if they are crap and maybe i’d buy them first instead of download them.. but instead I download, and buy the ones I really loved.. Deleted the shitty ones that wasted my time watching them..

575. Large Portions - May 20, 2010

Thats funny dloading NZB is not illegal…tell that to Newzbin…seems the courts disagree!!

default - May 20, 2010

The reasons why Newzbin was closed down are definately a bit more complex. There are other Usenet-Searchengines, but most of them cannot do more than just finding files. Newzbin had those “Reports”, ready-made packages of files, that made it possible for everyone to download all kinds of copyrighted stuff with a single click. The download of the NZB-File is not an illegal procedure, but the court considered the provision of those “packages” as illegal.

576. jakroo99 - May 20, 2010

I think nzb files would be legal but to index and comment about it might be questionable.

I wonder why didn’t they moved their servers to some third world country or Bahamas….

Thanks newzbin.com

default - May 20, 2010

Absolutely right, I also wonder why they didn’t just move it all to Russia for example. Now it’s too late, they can’t pull such a stunt… But I guess in a few days clone sites will appear, located in “safe” countries since the latest rumour is that the code was “stolen” 🙂

Thats the end of an era. This was my favorite site for years. Strange things happen these days. Yesterday my google account was hacked. Going back to MS Hotmail? One thing i must say: It was all becoming too easy these days. I know lots of guys with automated download queques, 1 click download movie sites etc. This could’nt last. The rest of the sites will be down soon, but there will be something else. There will always be something else…

580. Peter - May 20, 2010

This is such a sad day.

581. chris - May 20, 2010

For the amount of users they had, i’m sure theyll be able to pay the fine. Good luck to them, they definitely raised the bar for downloading, and technology in general. If only the industry offered something as good as newzbin to download their content cheaply, rather than charging $40/50 for a friggin bluray movie or $30 for a dvd.

582. joerg bitterman - May 20, 2010

they scammed us. 1 dollar here 2 here and 5 there. newzbin has 700.000 members. they stole like 2,5 dollar average. this makes mor than 1.5 MILLION POUND.
they fucking scammed us!!

they are laughing their asses off about us stupid users and how they fucking scammed us.

THEY MADE A MILLION POUND A YEAR, for some years. the site should have been for free.

Usenet Phantom - May 20, 2010

What and the site didn’t cost anything to run? Server space, bandwidth… all free right? I doubt it! A site with so many users and so much bandwidth usage would cost a fair bit to run. Their turnover may have been ~ £1million a year but their profit wasn’t.

Besides, individually, if we were scammed, it would have been for about £2 each. You had the choice not to pay too…

I got what I paid for, as did everyone else. Quit your complaining or follow the instructions on requesting your refund.

joerg - May 20, 2010

everyone knows this is pointless, you wouldn’t get any penny back.

this is the point about being SCAMMED, they took ‘r money and we never gonna get it back!

do you know what traffic costs nowadays? nearly nothing. servers etc can easily been paid with the ads that newzbin run. (giganews, newsleecher)

if you charge you user you have to provide also a service worth its money, and not whining that you cant increase retention above 240d because you lack server resources.
every fucking free site in the web got 600d and the only site that is charging is not able to do that? FUCK THAT.

Usenet Phantom - May 21, 2010

joerg, what’s your paypal email address? I’ll personally send you £2 for your refund if it means so much to you!

And you weren’t scammed. If you really believe you were then take it up with the authorities… I’m sure they would have a field day when they examine the evidence (i.e. your PC)

wobblymatt - May 20, 2010

They did not MAKE a million pounds in a year
They had a turnover of a million pounds!

Shompa - May 20, 2010

They had a great service. If they made millions of pounds, they were worth it. Nothing stops you from making a new newzbin and make millions of dollars.
And yes. I had a year worth of credits.

583. T - May 20, 2010

Well there is still nzbmatrix.com, merlins-portal.net, and nzbsrus.com, of course none of them have the same quality control and fantastic automation features of newzbin, but they are cheaper and still operational (for now!).

that is just funny, the people that constantly steal other people’s ideas (seen a movie lately that wasn’t a ripoff of a movie book song or epic poem?) get upset over people stealing their intellectual property? irony would show it’s face but it would get sued for looking too much like the mpaa’s complaint

Oh , yea, cos its not as easy… fucking n00b c**ts…. Assholesz.

OOOH shit , where do i find services like Newzbin ?

592. IANAL - May 20, 2010

I wonder if the timing of this is significant. I suspect there’s an element of choice involved in when a company decides to go into adminstration. Perhaps doing so before the final ruling on damages/costs gives priority to existing creditors? But IANAL.

593. Jello Biafra - May 20, 2010

i can’t believe that people got their moneys worth.

They provided nothing, everything they offer can be got for free, and despite my dislike of the MPAA I’m glad they took newzbin down.

Profiting from what they did is disgusting.

594. Gary - May 20, 2010

At last. It will be good to get rid of all downloads that are illegal just to stop the new found internet “free and cheap” wank brigade.

Go rent your films and support software houses.

Most of you are chav’s who spend all your cash on drugs/weed.

I bet the very same people who use hotukdeals and get ulcers if you find an item £2 cheaper after purchase.

Maybe google should be guilty for every rapidshare link it returns …

Giganews and other usenet “storage” providers still work with serveral pentabytes of binaries.. and that’s not problem…

Weird world…

I loved newzbin. I used to browse directly in the newsgroups to see what was there. I have not seen this functionality on other sites. I really don’t want to start to download headers. Almost a billion headers in alt.binaries.hdtv :). I don’t understand how Newzbin could loose the trial. It was only a search engine. Logically Google is the biggest pirate database if they can sue search engines. But Google have cash, so they are not sued. Always the small man who is crushed by the law.

Such a shame. I have been with newzbin sine 205 and I have loved every minute of it. It is sad to see it bear the brunt of the legal system, while other sites are still walking free.
Its like losing mininova and napster all over again 😦

614. Its a same - May 20, 2010

This has to have some grounds for appeal, but given the costs these chaps have incurred – would it be worth it? Probably not.

For the years i have used this listing service ( and that is all it is ) I have been happy to pay the pittance they were asking and would have gladly paid more.

NOW if they code was to be released and a fair number of “similar” services appear there could be grounds for a rebuttle based on an axiom change of usage. What was illegal last week might not be next week (so to speak) and could look to overturn posthumously.

Just a thought

I remember when I had to manually go through each group and search through headers for what I wanted. It literally took a good hour+ each day not to mention the fact that there was no easy way to search all binary groups if you wanted something fast.
Thanks to the Newzbin admins, who put in there time and effort for a pittance, users no longer had to go through that.

I am saddened by the fact that the admins, in helping users are now faced with financial difficulties. I can’t imagine how stressful it must be for them to be in that much debt.

To those wanting their money back -I’d like to add Newzbin has always been upfront with what was happening. When the legal difficulties started the shortened the amount you could purchase as well as stopping payments when they could not provide full service. I had a full year left, they are welcome to it for doing so much.

Good luck Newzbin, you will be missed

If the source does show up, I would definitely run the service on my servers – free of charge. I hope many others would do the same… create an unstoppable face to access the usenet in whatever way one chooses. Freedom of Information, Freedom of Choice.

622. educator - May 20, 2010

After all the posts on here about people whining with regards to their lost credit on newzbin I offer the following guide.

Firstly, you enterd into a contract with newzbin to access their service which was an indexing of the usenet facility. Your first step would be to prove that while the company lasted and before it went into liquidation, they failed to provide this service. This would be (most likely) achieved through the UK small claims court.

You will be required to provide details of how newzbin broke this contract while the company was in existance.

As you will no doubt be aware, you cannot use the legal system to claim any money back that has or was used to support an activity that is deemed to be illegal. Now, as all you newzbin users know, no one used newzbin to download any material that was in breech of copyright laws. This makes it relatively easy to claim your money back from an existing credit.

After proving that newzbin broke their contract with you (the consumer) , you must then prove that you used the indexing service to download copyright free material. Either that provided free of copyright by another person or you downloaded your own material that you had uploaded in the first place to which you own the copyright. This can be easily accomplished by contacting your ISP which will record all uploads and downloads of each and every file.

If you are successful in your legal claim, this ruling will be passed on to the administrators (not the people who set up the site but those who are now running the organisation) and placed in the queue.

I wish you all the best of luck. I have about £1.50 outstanding (approx $4) and I have already filed my claim with the small claims court. This claim has cost me £250 to put through the court system but it is worth every penny because I never downloaded anything that was copyrighted and always followed the rules explicitly…

.. I love British sarcasm.

Good luck with all your court claims – self absorbed, self obsessed teenage toss pots. Despite what you may think about yourself, you really are not that important in the whole scheme of things, but anyway, good luck with your claim.

Silly monkeys – change initiates innovation. I for one would be willing to assist in the development of something new… rather than bitching about what was or what was lost – put your energy into starting something new and better.

Then again, we’re all a bunch of pathetic lechers that expect everything done for us while we literally sit back and reap the rewards of someone else’s hard work. Does that attitude really deserve something to replace newzbin?

If nothing else, this thread along has demonstrated to those with some initiative, there is a great deal of money to be made here. Newzbin was a steal – the posts here prove people would pay double, triple, or more for the service to return!

A dark week for sure. Then again, “Its better to have loved and lost… “

Yeah, but as several people have tried to say, the MPA and whoever are most likely watching this forum, so if we post alternative sites, possibly those that the MPAA etc. don’t already know about, we are bringing them to their attention, I am sure that we can all find alternative sites on our own without advertising them on here and bringing them to “their” attention so they can go and give them site owners aggro.
Just my tuppence worth there, let’s keep this forum civil please, we are all here for the same reason, because we were all users of Newzbin and are all saddended to see it gone.

newzbin was the worst thing which happened to usenet

newsgroups got unstructured with boneless absorbing everything, posters don’t care about proper subjects

and all that for a guy to get several millions of $$$ with bits to two other admins

644. denom - May 21, 2010

usenet access is also more expensive because of advertising distortion and affilicate commission kickbacks, even free indexing sites run on advertising money which in the end come from user pockets.

without agressive advertising we could have usenet provider price in the range $5-$6 per month with giganews lowering prices or out of the game.

649. NewzGone - May 21, 2010

Newzbin should release an Application to install on your PC.

Everyday it should “fetch” the Newzbin database (from a Newsgroup!)

All Newzbin need to do is prepare the data every 24h and upload it anonymously of course!

This way Newzbin would still exist albeit 1 day behind and I cant see how they could shut this down as long as the server location was “secret” if u get me…

650. mark - May 21, 2010

I couldnt sleep yesterday! Couldnt stop think about my lost money on newzbin. I thought long and hard how i could get it back. I came up with the weirdest ideads, but there wasnt the golden way.

Probably I wont get my money back. I hope Casesium, Klante and Freaky those bastards, those motherfuckers will get Cancer, the worst kind of Cancer that there is. I hpe their kids get killed and their parents get paralyized.
That they worry till they cant sleep and cant bare the stress anymore and think about killing themself and leaving their families with nothing, that they suffer such pain that they cant enjoy nothing anying, that everything for them will be struggle.

651. Whoevere - May 21, 2010

R.I.P Newzbin, been a faithful member almost since you opened, you will be missed.

For all those saying you want your money back, stfu basically, you wont sue them for £3, in the UK to do so would cost you £120 to post a Small Claims Court Case, like that’s going to happen for the £3 outstanding on your account.

On a more fluffy note –

” Had interesting side channel discussions on irc with Mr Code Thief. Initially, yesterday, he approached me and said he had the site code and databases. I thought he was probably a clown. Today he PM’d me with several lines of code. Caesium has just confirmed that these lines of code ARE from the site source code.

653. Newzbin Shuts Down « TeraTechTown.com - May 21, 2010

[…] The announcement links to a blog post that contains additional information about the case. […]

Indeed a sad day. The internet is no longer free to us anymore. I wish the world would adopt Spain’s philosophy. If YOU host illegal content…you’re toast. If you simply point on a map where you can find it then well…that’s just public knowledge. Aren’t newsgroups part of free speech? Newsgroups were created for users to share data regardless of the content.

It is like arresting someone for telling you where you can get a prostitute in Vegas. Not that I’ve ever done that or anything…I’m just saying lol.

I love how people are moaning that the guys made money off Newzbin. So a few guys created a site that hundred of thousands of users can use, and get movies, tv shows etc for next to nothing and they begrudge them making money off it. Isnt that how the world works?

If you didnt like Newzbin or the fact the guys running it were making money, stop paying for access. Simple. I suspect alot of comments in here tho are from people trying to act “cool”

Just got email this….

Hi ex-Newzbin user.

Lamenting the departed site? Dreading doing Usenet the old skool way? Think the clone NZB sites suck?

Good news: we are Newzbin Two, and we have glad tidings:
NEWZBIN IS BACK! and we are the new management. The crew got most of the original Newzbin source code and the main databases.
We loved it too much to let it die.

The catch? We wont be up for a very short while cos things need to be done. For starters we need a cool domain name; also we need to hack on the code some more to make it run. We are nearly there but it is very complicated. We reckon we’ll up very soon.

So don’t drift off to those lame-ass wannabe NZB sites. Hang on for a little longer and the Big Dog will be back.

Ok, so it seems they have our e-mail addresses. Does this mean they have our names, addresses and credit card numbers as well, since all this had to be supplied to buy credit on Newzbin.

anoni-mouse - May 21, 2010

yes, it does mean that 😦

Anyone else just get this email?

Hi ex-Newzbin user.

Lamenting the departed site? Dreading doing Usenet the old skool
way? Think the clone NZB sites suck?

Good news: we are Newzbin Two, and we have glad tidings:
NEWZBIN IS BACK! and we are the new management. The crew got most
of the original Newzbin source code and the main databases.
We loved it too much to let it die.

The catch? We wont be up for a very short while cos things need
to be done. For starters we need a cool domain name; also we
need to hack on the code some more to make it run. We are nearly
there but it is very complicated. We reckon we’ll up very soon.

So don’t drift off to those lame-ass wannabe NZB sites. Hang on
for a little longer and the Big Dog will be back.

Well, another? file sharing site gone.
Guess you folks will have to actually PAY for your content, no more downloading dvd’s. Thieves always get caught..

MoLeY2k - May 21, 2010

Get with the time dude, this will not stop anything… Nothing or no one will, if all the copyright holders embraced the 21st century just like the end users have, then things would be a lot different, i.e. lowered the prices and timescales. Its not as if usenet is cheap! People are willing to pay! People just don’t want to get ripped off!

just got this email so i guess someone at least got their db.

Anhonestjoe should look up what Newzbin did it was not an P2P site but just a plane old indexing site, because the film industry could not get to the Usenet providers they hit at someone who just index them.

Great news if true, signed up to Nzbmatrix but miss the functionality of Newzbin.

Why am I getting these unprofessional and unsolicited emails from Team R Dogs / Newzbin2?

Reptor - May 21, 2010

Same here. Very odd…

dimaj - May 21, 2010

Same here…
If these guys are not Newzbin, how the hell did they get our email addresses?

Disturbed - May 21, 2010

It is very disturbing that someone else has our information now. And from what I can deduce from the way the email was written, it’s definately doesn’t sound like a legitimate company, but rather someone living in mom’s basement.

anoni-mouse - May 21, 2010

newzbin’s database got stolen and this “team r dogs” have all of your personal information.
better put a fraud alert on your name to the credit report agencies.

682. agfarmer - May 21, 2010

got the same message, sounds like a successful grab/hack of the members database, arguably one of the most valuable bits… hope no credit card details were stored unsecurely

deepsharer - May 21, 2010

Newbin didnt store Credit card numbers – it was handed off to a third party payment processor as I recall

683. A Hitler - May 21, 2010

I think this email is bullshit. It is probably from other NZB related website that you happen to be signed up to. I think this email is spam send out to lots of people hoping that they will hit people who used to use Newzbin. I don’t believe the site was hacked. I don’t believe anyone has a database of user accounts. They definately do not have credit card data of Newzbin users. Whoever sent this email is probably trying to setup some cheap imitation of Newzbin and is trying to cash in by trying to get traffic from ex-Newzbin users.

Lets buy rock island and form new country. lets not keep any formal contacts with anybody and then reopen website or just move it to venezuela

That, if you knew your history, is exactly how Newzbin started.

688. Ralph - May 21, 2010

Wow I got that e-mail too. In my spam folder. Probable belongs there and should be deleted. “The crew got most
of the original Newzbin source code and the main databases.
We loved it too much to let it die.” hacked and stole it they should have said… Probable a good thing to give them a wide miss!!!

Bye Bye Newzbin you were the best!!!

No they did not get the code….

I t Was given to them….

It’s a sad sad day for Usenet. You guys at Newzbin are welcome to keep the balance on my account. I got my moneys worth and then some from your service.
NZBMatrix is ok, but not up to the caliber of service provided by Newzbin.

692. Pont - May 21, 2010

makes me worried that someone has my email addy and Newzbin can keep everything from me .

693. I Am Not Here - May 22, 2010

Pont – just because you downloaded a .nzb, does not prove you used that .nzb to download it’s contents.

Too bad – newzbin was great as was newzxxx.
